HBO Max gave horror fans a <a href="https://comicvibe.com/heidi-klums-halloween-2026-costume-is-simply-out-of-hand/” title=”Heidi Klum’s Halloween 2026 Costume Is Simply Out of Hand”>Halloween gift this year. HBO released a surprise episode of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ on the streaming platform Saturday at midnight. The special is called ‘A Story of Derry.’ It arrived with almost no warning.
The new episode is a short one. It runs 30 minutes and is set hundreds of years before the show’s events and the arrival of Pennywise. That makes it a true prequel to the prequel.
The official logline sets the scene. Hundreds of years before Pennywise, three youngsters venture into the Western Wood, where they meet a terrifying ancient spirit. The story keeps its focus on the children. There is no clown in sight.
HBO Max shared a teaser on Instagram. The post called it a surprise Halloween treat and described a never-before-seen special about the origins of IT in Derry. The clip shows a Native American girl running through the woods. She holds a bow and arrow, ready to fire.
A surprise drop with no warning
Fans had no real notice. The episode arrived at midnight on October 31, 2026, with basically no advance marketing. Some rumors floated around online first. Bloody Disgusting confirmed that the rumors were true once the episode went live.
This is a break from the usual rollout. The main series follows a weekly schedule. A shadow drop is a rare move for a prestige HBO show. It rewards fans who check the app on Halloween.
Why the setting matters
The special does not stand alone. It ties back to a key moment in the main series. It takes place before the events of Episode 4, which explained why IT cannot leave the town. Viewers who remember that flashback will know the Western Woods.
SlashFilm describes the link the same way. The special expands the flashback origin story from Episode 4. The three young characters from that flashback are Necani, Kino and Maneese.
The episode also opens with a title card. It sets a clear tone. It explains that this version differs from the story fans already know. The card refers to the Kollu. In the story, the Kollu preyed on a people long ago. Those people left warnings for later generations. They hid the truth inside a gentler tale so their children could carry it.
That framing is smart. It treats the legend like a folk tale. It also hints that the real history is much darker.
A quick look back at season 1
The series has done well for the platform. It premiered on HBO Max on Oct. 26, 2025. It is based on Stephen King’s novel ‘It’ and builds on the two-part ‘It’ film reboot from 2017 and 2019. The show works as a prequel to those films.
Bill Skarsgård returned as Pennywise. He played the clown in the movies too. The first season ran for eight episodes. All eight are available to stream on HBO Max.
The season ended in December 2025. Since its October 2025 premiere, the series has become one of HBO Max’s biggest hits. Softonic adds that it drew generally positive reviews and became one of the platform’s top horror launches.
Season 2 is coming
A second season is confirmed. HBO announced the renewal on Aug. 17, 2026. The wait for that news felt long to some fans. SlashFilm noted that HBO took an unusually long time to officially confirm the renewal, since Season 1 wrapped in December 2025.
There is no release date yet. HBO has not announced an official premiere date for Season 2. One report says the new season will cover the 1935 Bradley Gang massacre. That event is a dark piece of Derry history from Stephen King’s world.
