    Key Takeaways

    • Damon Wayans Sr. believes a raunchy sketch show like In Living Color could succeed today: “You just have to be bold about it.”
    • Speaking with Entertainment Tonight alongside David Alan Grier, Wayans cited Scary Movie’s success as proof audiences still want that humor and described In Living Color as character-driven rather than political.
    • In Living Color ran for five seasons and ended in 1994 after creator Keenen Ivory Wayans left amid creative and business disputes with Fox.

Damon Wayans Sr. believes that raunchy sketch comedy shows like In Living Colorcould still work today if they’re good enough.

In a recent sit-down with Entertainment Tonight,Wayans was joined by David Alan Grier(who also appeared on In Living Color) for a brief discussion about their history of working together ahead of the former joining the latter on St. Denis Medical for its third season.

During the course of the conversation, the topic of In Living Color came up, and Wayans gave his perspective on whether a show like that would work in today’s social, political, and comedic climate.

“I believe that it could work,” he began around the minute mark. “You just have to be bold about it.”

“It’s like, Scary Moviewas huge, and that means people want that brand of humor, so all you have to do is deliver,” Wayans continued. “You’re going to have the haters, but I think for the most part, people are going to embrace it.”

Wayans ended his thoughts about the possibility by explaining that In Living Colorwas about “character-driven comedy” and didn’t approach topics like politics.

Check out Wayans’ comments about In Living Color below.

Over the course of its five-season run, In Living Colordealt with its fair share of controversy. Fox censors often clashed with creator Keenen Ivory Wayans over the sketches for being too vulgar and offensive.

The show was eventually canceled in 1994 after Keenen left due to creative and business disputes with Fox.
