HBO takes a lot of the credit for the rise of prestige TV. Shows such as The Sopranos, The Wire, Sex and the City and Game of Thrones were appointment viewing, and that tradition lives on with newer series such as Industry, Euphoria and more. Its streaming service, HBO Max, is also home to tons of great movies, live sports and excellent documentaries.
Historically, HBO reserves some of its biggest shows for Sunday nights, and this month, Emmy-nominated period drama The Gilded Age will anchor the Sunday schedule. Season 4 of the Julian Fellowes-created series about the dramatic lives of wealthy New Yorkers at the tail end of the 19th century will consist of eight episodes, the first of which arrives on Nov. 1 on HBO and HBO Max. Since HBO is also home to many A24 films, this month you can catch the streaming premiere of the Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony starting Nov. 20.
On top of those titles, the streamer will introduce several documentaries this month, including the critically acclaimed film When A Witness Recants, co-produced by Ta-Nehisi Coates, and The Slightest Touch, a moving story of Emma Fogarty, a woman who suffers from a rare skin condition and has defied all the odds against her.
Here’s a peek at some of the biggest titles coming to HBO Max in November.

The Gilded Age (Season 4)
Now entering its fourth season, the characters in The Gilded Age have evolved quite a bit since we first met them. George and Bertha Russell (Morgan Spector and Carrie Coon), new-money social climbers hoping to enter the upper echelon of New York society, have finally made it, but their marriage has suffered as a result. As they spend time apart, the rest of society is changing: Oscar van Rhijn and Enid Winterton (Blake Ritson and Kelley Curran) have entered a marriage of convenience, Peggy Scott (Denee Benton) is preparing for her own wedding and Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) continues to torment (and delight) everyone with her viciously witty bon mots. The new season drops on Nov. 1, and new episodes will arrive on HBO Max on Sundays.

City of God: The Fight Rages On is a Brazilian crime drama that’s a spin-off of the acclaimed 2002 film City of God by Fernando Meirelles. The show is set two decades after the events of the film; the series follows photojournalist Wilson “Rocket” Rodrigues (Alexandre Rodrigues) as he returns to his impoverished neighborhood, known as the City of God, to document the lives of the residents there as their lives are disrupted by drugs and violence.

When a Witness Recants
The new HBO documentary When a Witness Recants is the story of three teens who were convicted of a murder in 1983, though they were actually innocent. The film explores the effects of their decades-long incarceration and the fact that the testimony that helped put them away was fabricated and coerced out of the young witnesses who were pressured into testifying.

The Hotline
If you’ve ever wondered who is taking calls at the other end of an emergency hotline, The Hotline will provide a look behind the curtain. The new documentary offers a look at the people who work at the overdose prevention helpline Never Use Alone, providing a life-saving service during America’s ongoing opioid crisis.

A24
In the A24 film Tony, Dominic Sessa plays a young Anthony Bourdain as he follows his crush, Nancy, to Provincetown, Mass., for a summer and discovers his passion for cooking. Directed by Matt Johnson, the film co-stars Emilia Jones, Leo Woodall and Antonio Banderas. It arrives on HBO Max on Nov. 20.

The Slightest Touch
The Slightest Touch is a new documentary produced by Colin Farrell, and it’s the story of Emma Fogarty, a longtime friend of Farrell’s who suffers from epidermolysis bullosa, a rare skin condition that makes her susceptible to blistering and skin damage at the smallest touch. And yet, in spite of all the odds, Emma decided to run the Dublin Marathon with Farrell. The Slightest Touch is a story of friendship and perseverance and overcoming the odds. (If epidermolysis bullosa sounds familiar, it was also the subject of a 2025 Netflix documentary, Matter of Time, which focused on musician Eddie Vedder’s mission to raise awareness of the condition.)
