Beyond Roblox: Are Digital Platforms Addressing Online Grooming?

Handing a child a tablet has become the new norm for parents to buy themselves some peace, and who can blame them? It gives you just enough time to drink a hot cup of coffee or finally answer an urgent email. But even that relief could come with a sense of anxiety in today’s digital world. You can clearly see the colourful online game on the screen, but you can’t always see who might be typing in the chat box.

Keeping kids safe on the internet usually comes down to two main challenges: controlling what they can see and managing who can reach out to them.

Roblox’s recent response to backlash over child safety is a great example of this conversation. However, the bigger issue isn’t simply counting how many new safety tools a company launches. The real question is whether these features actually work together to reduce the chances of abuse occurring in the first place.

    What Has Happened With Roblox?

On 14 August 2025, the attorney general of Louisiana filed a lawsuit claiming that Roblox had failed to effectively protect children from adult predators and sexual exploitation. It’s worth noting that these were allegations rather than a formal court finding of liability. Roblox completely rejected any accusations that they were intentionally endangering their users and quickly pointed to their existing moderation systems, chat filters and parental controls as proof of their commitment to protect their users.

Despite these positive steps taken by Roblox, reporting from WIRED in January documented multiple complaints regarding incorrect age classifications alongside concerning listings that advertised pre-verified accounts for sale.

Why This Isn’t Just A Gaming Problem

According to Childline figures gathered between April 2025 and March 2026, platforms like Snapchat were mentioned in 324 counselling sessions relating to online sexual abuse. Additionally, TikTok was brought up 234 times, Instagram featured in 197 sessions and Discord was noted 92 times.

Neither an accepted friend request nor a shared membership in an online community offers instant proof that a user is trustworthy. The main focus for product designers must be what happens before contact is made, how the system operates during a conversation and what processes take place immediately after someone raises a serious concern.

What Are Platforms Doing To Limit Unwanted Contact?

Since child grooming has become a growing concern, digital platforms have implemented strategic measures to enhance digital safety for younger users.

    Age Checks And Communication Limits

Roblox now requires age checks for chat and limits communication to similar age groups, with a few exceptions for accounts labelled as Trusted Friends.

Since their published age bands still allow some older teenagers to interact with young adults, the accuracy of the system and how companies handle these exceptions are absolutely vital.

    Restrictive Defaults

Snapchat keeps teen accounts private by default and turns off location sharing from the very beginning. Meanwhile, Discord’s September 2026 update introduced a system that routes non-friend messages to a separate inbox while warning teens about unfamiliar requests.

    Parental Visibility

The Snapchat Family Center lets parents see their child’s friends and recent contacts without reading the private conversations. Additionally, Discord’s version adds activity logs and guardian controls for sensitive content but it doesn’t let parents actually remove their teenagers from these servers.

But at the end of the day, seeing what a child is doing online is very different from having the power to intervene and stop certain behaviours from progressing.

    Reporting And Blocking

Discord provides standard tools to report problematic content and offers the option to block abusive users. Some questions might, however, be raised, including how quickly these serious reports are reviewed, what happens to repeat offenders and whether younger users can actually understand the outcomes.

    Behavioural Detection

Roblox uses its Sentinel system to look for early patterns of child endangerment and flag concerning conversations for human review. While company-reported detection figures offer useful evidence about how a tool operates, corporate press releases don’t automatically serve as definitive proof of reduced abuse across the platform.

Can Age Checks Solve A Behaviour Problem?

While age verification can set up early digital boundaries, the reality is that an initial check at sign-up can’t determine a person’s true intentions or guarantee who will use that account at a later stage.

Roblox openly acknowledged this limitation recently by describing a secondary system designed to evaluate whether a user’s ongoing activity actually matches the estimated age on file. This proves that an initial age check and continuous behavioural safeguards serve two completely different protective purposes.

Relying too heavily on age checks also creates brand new problems when these systems inevitably make errors. When mistakes happen, users desperately need workable remedies to fix them. Roblox currently outlines correction routes through ID verification and linked parental controls.

Data privacy is just another reason why age checks aren’t the only solution. Roblox claims a partner company deletes facial age-estimation images immediately after processing, while Discord says its estimation technology runs locally on the user’s device rather than in the cloud. We have to remember these are simply corporate policies rather than independent audit findings and deleting acation that results from it

    What Does UK Regulation Require?

The UK regulatory framework already addresses both content and contact risks. Ofcom’s illegal-content regime took effect in March 2025 with strict measures targeting online grooming, followed by dedicated Protection of Children requirements in July 2025.

This legislation, however, isn’t a universal instruction that demands every single app to scan every user’s face. The required legal measures depend entirely on a service’s unique features and perceived risks, which gives providers the freedom to find effective alternatives that still fulfil their duties.

Ofcom’s 2026 assessment notes that properly implemented checks can be highly effective but warns that no single method is entirely foolproof. The regulator makes a clear distinction between empty promises and actual implementation, stating clearly that tech companies are expected to deliver real changes rather than announcing them for the purpose of good PR.

Child Protection Is More Than Simply A Few Hidden Safety Features

It’s easy to assume that every digital platform is failing at child safety, but that isn’t the case. However, the real focus needs to shift to how safety is built directly into the app from day one. For instance, a busy parent shouldn’t have to dig through a confusing settings menu just to stumble across an optional safety dashboard. Instead, protections need to be switched on by default and the reporting process has to be accessible so that children actually understand what happens after they ask for help.

Big feature launches also mean very little without the hard numbers to back them up. Tech companies need to start publishing real outcomes regarding unwanted contact rates and repeat offenders. They also have to test their systems against the most obvious attempts to bypass these restrictions. When the software inevitably makes a mistake, fixing it needs to be fair and easy for innocent users.

The conversation has moved past asking if an app simply has a few child-safety features. The only thing that matters now is whether those tools actually stop predators from making contact in the first place and whether tech companies can finally prove it.
