A new Netflix docuseries is taking audiences into the life of Matthew Perry three years after he died at his home in Los Angeles. Titled “The One About Matthew Perry,” it features interviews with family members and friends who knew him <a href="https://comicvibe.com/5-best-video-games-like-a-way-out/” title=”5 Best Video Games Like A Way Out”>best, as well as people he helped with their own struggles with addiction. The three-part series is directed by Mary Robertson, who previously helmed ID’s “Quiet on Set,” a true crime documentary series about child stars who worked on Nickelodeon shows.
Viewers might wonder whether Perry’s “Friends” co-stars appear in the documentary, considering how his legacy is intertwined with one of the best sitcoms ever made. But Robertson told Gold Derby that they “declined to participate,” adding: “We know the cast of Friends were very close with Matthew in real life, and they are grieving.”
While the “Friends” cast doesn’t appear in “The One About Matthew Perry,” it does feature people who worked on the sitcom. One is writer and producer Jeff Strauss, who worked on the first season, while another is Warren Littlefield, the former president of NBC Entertainment who greenlit the pilot. Perry’s family also plays a significant role in the documentary.
Matthew Perry’s sister plays a central role in the Netflix docuseries
Mia Perry Bowick, the actor’s sister, is one of the central voices in “The One About Matthew Perry,” which also features previously unreleased family photos and footage of the star. She joined the project to show viewers who her brother was away from the cameras. She told Tudum: “It’s taken time for me to feel ready to share these memories and what it was like to love Matthew through all the complexity of his life — to see him as a whole person, not just as Chandler, and not just as someone who struggled with addiction.”
Perry spoke openly about his addiction and advocated for others seeking recovery. He received the Champion of Recovery award at the White House in 2013 for his advocacy, which included helping establish a men’s sober-living facility. After his death, the Matthew Perry Foundation was established to continue his work.
Mary Robertson also told Vulture: “It’s our intention that it helps people. It’s my intention that the film provide balm and entertainment, which is part of how we help people too.”
All three episodes of the series are now streaming on Netflix.
