The actor said his residuals check on that network sitcom was once so large he “thought it was a joke.”
David Henrie will forever be known as Justin Russo on Wizards of Waverly Place. But in one major way, he might as well be forgotten.
The 37-year-old actor, who got his big break playing the brother to Selena Gomez‘s Alex Russo, looked back on his four-season tenure on the hit Disney Channel sitcom. Speaking with Josh Peck and Ben Soffer of the Good Guyspodcast, Henrie made a shocking claim about his post-Wizardspay.
When Soffer asked Henrie if he got residuals for his time on the series, Henrie glumly responded, “Not really, no. Disney was very, I think it was after at that time they hadn’t combined, so there really wasn’t much residuals. Maybe a little bit here and there, but nothing really.”

Entertainment Weeklyhas reached out to Disney for comment.
Henrie first appeared on Wizardsin 2007, when he was 18. By that time, he already had a bustling career in the entertainment industry, having appeared on series likeJudging Amy, Without a Trace, and NCIS, and in films like Arizona Summer.
He also had already made his first appearance as Luke Mosby on How I Met Your Mother. Though it was always a recurring role, Henrie appeared on episodes across the series’ full, nine-season run.
According to Henrie, “the network stuff that I did, like How I Met Your Mother, was a completely different thing. Network TV took really good care of their people, but I don’t know what it was about kids television.”

With regard to HIMYM, Henrie explained that he shot 30 episodes “and then they cut them into 90. Isn’t that crazy?” Because of that, he earned far higher residuals.
“I remember one time I literally I thought it was a joke. I went and got a residual check out of the mail and I saw it and I thought it was a joke,” he laughed. “So, I called my like business manager and I was like, ‘Hey, they made a mistake. Like that there’s no way. I think they added a zero on accident.’ And they’re like, ‘Nope, that’s it.’ I was like, ‘Unbelievable.'”
Henrie isn’t the only one with an egregious Disney Channel residuals story. During the 2023 joint WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike, Lizzie McGuirealum Robert Carradine shared a residual he received for his time on the show amounting to a whopping $0.00. In the caption, Carradine wrote, “Why we’re striking.”
