Coven Academy Season 2 Is Officially Happening After a Magical Debut on Disney+ and Hulu

Class is officially back in session at Crescent Veil Academy! Disney has renewed its supernatural young adult series Coven Academy for a second season, and the news came less than a month after the witchy series made its debut.

A Fast Renewal Backed by Big Numbers

Disney didn’t waste any time on this one. According to Deadline, the first season racked up 20.3 million global viewing hours in its first three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu. On top of that, the first chapter pulled in more than 30 million additional views after Disney shared it on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

The show also connected with exactly the audience Disney was hoping to reach. Per Nielsen, Coven Academy was the No. 1 streaming series among viewers ages 12 to 17 during its premiere weekend and ranked in the Top 5 among all viewers based on views. It turned into a family watch too, with half of teen viewers and nearly two thirds of kids ages 6 to 11 watching alongside an adult.

Critics were on board early as well. The series opened with a perfect 100% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer.

That success comes after a bumpy road to premiere. Before the show ever aired, One Million Moms came out against Disney’s Coven Academy, but viewers clearly showed up anyway.

    What Is Coven Academy About?

Coven Academy was created by Tim Federle, the creator of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Set in New Orleans, the series follows three teenage witches and their charming warlock peers as they face deadly secrets, dangerous power and forbidden love while ancient forces threaten their city.

Interestingly, this wasn’t always meant to be a Freeform show. The project was originally ordered for Disney Channel before moving to Freeform. Federle also executive produces Vampirina: Teenage Vampire, which kicked off its second season on Disney Channel this month.

    A Unique Way to Binge

Coven Academy took a different approach to its release. The series premiered on Freeform on October 1 as part of the network’s 31 Nights of Halloween, with the full season landing the next day on Disney+ and Hulu. On streaming, the season was split into 21 shorter chapters running roughly 10 to 22 minutes each, making it an easy binge and a perfect fit for the Huluween lineup.

    Who Stars in Coven Academy?

The series stars Malina Pauli Weissman as Briar, Malachi Barton as Jake, Jordan Leftwich as Sasha, Ora Duplass as Tegan, Louis Thresher as Ollie, and Tiffani Thiessen as headmistress Miss Graves, with Devon Sawa guest starring as Mr. Cole. Disney Channel fans will also recognize Barton from Camp Rock 3.

Behind the scenes, Federle executive produces alongside Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Amanda Row and Bronwyn North Reist. The series comes from Federle’s Chorus Boy Productions in association with Disney Kids & Family, and Federle will continue as executive producer for season 2.

    What Could Season 2 Bring?

The cast has been hoping for this news. Malina Pauli Weissman has said she’d love to see Briar’s story continue, both her love life and her journey learning alongside her coven sisters. That means the love triangle between Briar, Jake and Ollie should have plenty of room to grow.

Federle has also said from the start that he built the first season to launch a longer story that could carry into future seasons, so fans can expect the world of Crescent Veil to keep expanding.

When Will Coven Academy Season 2 Premiere?

For now, fans will need a little patience. Disney has not announced a premiere date, production timeline or episode count for season 2. Given how well the Halloween launch worked, a return during a future spooky season would make a lot of sense, but that is just speculation until Disney shares more.

In the meantime, the complete first season of Coven Academy is streaming now on Disney+, Hulu and Freeform On Demand.
