Central Michigan women’s hockey line of Natalie Zaviski, Alyssa Borlace and Mallory Camryn accounted for every goal for the Chippewas in the first game of its series. The team spent the weekend at Niagara University, played two games, and returned to Mount Pleasant still undefeated at 8-0.
Four consecutive sweeps to start the season gives the squad a hot start. Through eight games in the 2025-2026 season, the Chippewas were 5-3.
Coincidentally, the seventh and eighth games were also against the Purple Eagles, sweeping them at Martin Ice Arena.
This past weekend, CMU didn’t allow a goal, winning 4-0 and 2-0.
Both goaltenders in maroon and gold played in the series. Sydney Pound started the first game, and Lainie Fliegel started the second, and both earned their first shutouts of the season.
The opening goal of the series came from a pass from Borlace behind the net to find a wide-open Zaviski six feet in front of the netminder. She picked her spot up top and fired a wrist shot past the goalie’s glove hand.
This line would continue to pressure Niagara all weekend.
Camryn had a pair of goals in the second period. First, she found an opening net-side, flipping it into an open net, and then she glided past a defender up close to the net and shot right over the goaltender’s shoulder to make it 3-0.
Borlace joined her linemates in the goal-scoring in the third period. She streaked up the left boards entering the offensive zone and flipped to the forehand, rifling a wrist shot to the short side corner.
In game two, Taylor Storey put Central Michigan on the board first late in the first period by beating a lone defender while skating across the blue line and then beating the goaltender to the forehand for an easy goal.
Just inside a minute remaining in the second period, freshman Helen Montross netted her first career goal at the collegiate level. She grabbed a rebound from her own shot in front of the net and punched it in.
Zoie Sawdy recognized the achievement immediately, picking up the puck and giving it to one of the coaches on the bench for safekeeping.
It was a successful road trip for the Chippewas, who will be coming back to Mount Pleasant for a few home games.
Next up for CMU is Hope College on Friday, Oct. 30 at Martin Ice Arena, then on Halloween is a hosted exhibition game against the 19U Grand Rapids Griffins amateur team.
