Marvel Fans Spot A Weird Chris Evans Change In Avengers: Doomsday TV Spot

The hype for “Avengers: Doomsday” is at an all-time high now that we’re less than two months away from the film’s release. But it’s not as if the movie has had an easy road to this point. Robert Downey Jr.’s casting as Victor Von Doom prompted accusations of desperation back in 2024, and more recently, Marvel fans slammed the latest “Doomsday” trailer over a Captain America joke. Now, those same fans have spotted an odd inconsistency between two “Doomsday” previews, and this latest development is less controversial and more, well, weird.

RDJ isn’t the only Marvel Cinematic Universe legend returning for “Doomsday.” The film also sees Chris Evans’ reprise the role of Steve Rogers, the former Captain America who gave up his shield following 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” The actor’s return was reported in 2024 and confirmed in December 2025 with the arrival of the first “Doomsday” teaser trailer. A scene in a later trailer then showed the former Captain American emerging from the shadows to greet his old friend Thor (Chris Hemsworth). Now, the same scene has reappeared in the latest TV spot, which debuted following the reveal of new “Doomsday” footage during game 1 of the World Series. But as <a href="https://comicbookmovie.com/avengers/avengers-doomsday/avengers-doomsday-fans-notice-a-bizarre-steve-rogers-change-in-the-latest-tv-spot-a230640?from=hp-top-d” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>ComicBookMovie has noted, fans have noticed a subtle change to visuals, whereby Evans’ face appears to have been modified slightly.

No way they actually changed Steve’s hairline and nose with CGI 😭

The difference is imperceptible at a glance, especially since the TV spot only shows Evans’ face for less than a second. But it does seem as though Marvel Studios has altered parts of the actor’s face. Why? Well, therein lies the mystery.

Is Marvel Studios messing with Chris Evans’ facial features?

Marvel Studios has already changed visual elements of “Avengers: Doomsday” since we first saw footage of the movie. An updated scene in which Victor Von Doom and Thor go head to head revealed that Marvel had added a Jack Kirby-inspired visual upgrade to Doom’s energy blasts. Now, we have yet another visual change. This latest one, however, is sort of confounding.

We’ve taken a look at the Steve Rogers reveal scene in the original “Doomsday” trailer and compared it to the new TV spot, and there does indeed appear to be subtle differences between Chris Evans’ eyebrows, hairline, and nose in both examples. Now that it’s been pointed out, I remember briefly wondering why Evans’ nose looked slightly larger than normal in the original footage, but put it down to the fact that, y’know, people get older and faces change. But now that Marvel Studios has seemingly made deliberate changes to the footage, it does make you wonder what on earth is going on behind the scenes. It could have something to do with lighting, but both shots appear to be the same take with almost identical lighting, and there’s still an unmistakable difference to Evans’ nose length.

Updating Doom’s plasma blasts to mimic the Kirby Krackle makes sense as a visual upgrade that acknowledges comic book history in a franchise built on that very enterprise. But subtle changes to Evans’ facial proportions? That’s just kind of bizarre. Not that it has any major consequences for, well, anything. But it does speak to a common criticism of Marvel Studios.

What does this latest visual change to Avengers: Doomsday mean?

Chris Evans' Steve Rogers looks off to his left in Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel Studios movies aren’t necessarily known for being visual masterpieces. In fact, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has come under fire for delivering flat, uninteresting visuals before, to the point it’s become a bit of a grim calling card for the franchise. The overuse of CGI and green screens in MCU films have combined to create a sort of bewildering mishmash of scenes that feel distractingly confected (not to mention the fact overworked and underpaid CGI artists themselves have long been fed up with Marvel Studios). In the end, these movies’ attempts to actualize the fantastical on-screen often fail to sustain a sense of cinematic believability, and that’s undoubtedly played into the MCU’s struggles in recent years.

Now, we’re left to wonder why Marvel’s messing with Chris Evans’ nose. It might seem like a minor thing, but in a larger sense, it calls into question whether anything we’re seeing in these movies was actually captured in-camera on the day. At a time when artificial intelligence threatens to undermine much of the artistry of cinematography already, what are we supposed to take from a change like this? Perhaps Marvel decided to try to make Steve Rogers look slightly older in the original trailer but reversed course on that prior to the TV spot?

Ultimately, this could be a one-off thing that has little bearing on the rest of the movie. But it is, at the very least, interesting to note what visual manipulations Marvel Studios is using. We expect alien worlds constructed
