While we all aren’t loving the long gaps between seasons, there’s one show that has been doing this for so long, it’s kind of easy to forget it exists. Fortunately, upon its return, it has landed a 100% Rotten Tomatoes critic score, at least with early reviews in.
This is <a href="https://www.netflix.com/search?q=lupin&jbv=80994082″ rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>LupinPart 4, the new chapter of the story of Assane Diop, a world-famous thief played by Omar Sy. The French show is based on Arsène Lupin, a character created by Maurice Leblanc in the early 1900s, and he has been resurrected for an ongoing Netflix series, one that started in 2021, but now? It has been three years since Part 3 aired. Here’s the schedule:
Part 1 and Part 2 were pretty much one season split in half. But after that, you can see that it was almost a 2.5-year wait between seasons. Now? It is exactly three years between Parts 3 and 4. As such, I am not terribly surprised that despite these scores, Lupinhas not even charted on Netflix’s top 10 list in the US after its release yesterday.
The show is great. While this 100% Rotten Tomatoes score could come down with more reviews in, history says that it probably won’t. Season 3 also had a 100% score, and the show overall has a 98% score among critics (a 79% among audiences).
It’s not entirely clear why LupinPart 4 took a full three years to get here. It has 8 episodes, one more than Part 3, and it’s supposed to be bigger in scale than previous seasons. Omar Sy has also been in six different movies from 2023 to now, which obviously could play some part in that. He was in David Fincher’s The Killer on Netflix, and his highest-scored film wasI Was a Stranger in 2024, which boasts a stellar 8/10 on IMDB, great in the context of that site. What are people saying about LupinPart 4? Here’s a sampling:
FandomWire – “LupinPart 4 finds a satisfying complication in Assane’s reputation becoming his worst alibi. Omar Sy makes the predicament entertaining. But the technology sometimes does too much of the plotting.”
Guardian – “Sy, whose performance is magnetic as always, has graduated to co-showrunner and wants to lean harder into the show’s “superhero”-like qualities. These include tech and set pieces which undoubtedly add a sprinkling of Marvel.”
Marvel, huh? You may forget that Omar Sy has played a superhero before, appearing in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Pastas Bishop. He’s not one of the limited FOX cast appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, which is no great shock.
So, more Lupin. It’s bigger, it’s still great, and even though its arrival may be flying under the radar, you may want to check it out.
