    Key Points

    • You Can See Everything features full-frontal nudity.

    • The shocking moment is the reason why the documentary has an R rating.

    • Nathan Fielder’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary is now in theaters.

This article contains spoilers fromYou Can See Everything.

Eyebrows were raised when it was reported that Nathan Fielder‘s new Elizabeth Holmes documentary earned an R-rating, with “graphic nudity” listed as one reason. Yet viewers couldn’t have been prepared for how that would play out.

You Can See Everything finds Fielder and a small camera crew embedded with Holmes, her partner Billy Evans, and their young kids in the 34 days leading up to her reporting to prison. The portrayal of this couple is so intimate that Evans is shown fully nude while showering.

Why was this important to do? Why did Evans allow it? All great questions. Like many baffling moments in the three-hour film, there likely is no reasonable explanation.

Evans has been in a relationship with the disgraced Theranos founder since 2017, after the initial reports of her company’s fraud. Evans is a hotel heir whose family owns a series of luxury resorts in San Diego. He attended MIT and worked in tech, and as You Can See Everything documents, he and Holmes are trying to launch a new company.

At one point, the film features a montage of Evans working out, before quickly cutting to him in the shower, seemingly comfortable with his genitals being exposed to the camera. It may be the first true shock moment of many to come, followed by a laugh-out-loud interaction where Fielder and Evans bump into each other as Evans is exiting the bathroom, now at least in a towel.

In the early 2010s, Holmes became a notable Silicon Valley innovator through her company Theranos, which claimed to revolutionize the health care industry with cheap diagnostic testing that would screen patients for hundreds of diseases with just a few drops of blood. However, the technology was eventually exposed as a massive, multiyear fraud. Holmes is currently three years into an 11-year sentence (reduced to nine years for good behavior) for fraud and conspiracy.

Fielder recently revealed that neither Holmes nor Evans had seen the film at that point, with the co-director saying that Evans “started trying to exert a level of control over the process that made it very hard to engage with him, and it was uncomfortable for us and A24.”

Fielder continued, “We sort of had to stop. Communication broke down basically, and we’ve been in that state for a little bit. So it’s been challenging in that way.”

Communication with Evans being a challenge is not surprising after you’ve seen the tense interaction between Fielder, Evans, and Amanda Seyfried in You Can See Everything. Oh yeah, did we mention that the actress who won an Emmy for playing Holmes in The Dropout has a major role here? She’s so good it almost makes you forget you’re watching Evans bare it all…almost.
