In January 1993, Michael Jackson changed the Super Bowl forever. Now the story behind that unforgettable performance is getting its own documentary. Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl is coming to Hulu on Disney+ and ESPN in February 2027, and the first trailer is already here.

The Halftime Show That Changed Everything

On January 31, 1993, Super Bowl XXVII took place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. At halftime, Michael Jackson rocketed onto the stage and then did something no one expected. He stood completely still, for nearly two minutes, while the stadium roared.

From there, he performed “Jam,” “Billie Jean,” and “Black or White,” then closed with “Heal the World,” joined by more than 3,000 children on the field.

Before that night, Super Bowl halftime shows usually featured marching bands and themed productions. Jackson turned halftime into a must watch event, and it set the standard for the superstar shows that followed, from Prince and Madonna to Beyoncé and beyond. More than 30 years later, it’s still considered one of the greatest halftime shows of all time.

    What the Documentary Covers

Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl takes viewers behind the scenes of the performance, following Jackson and his team as they prepared for the show. According to the official description, the film includes never before seen footage of Michael and his team and looks at the show’s lasting impact on music, sports, and pop culture.

Hulu teased the documentary with a simple message: “In January 1993, history was made.”

    The Team Behind the Film

The documentary is directed by Bao Nguyen, who also directed Netflix’s acclaimed The Greatest Night in Pop, about the legendary night “We Are the World” was recorded. That makes him a perfect fit for another look at a defining Michael Jackson moment.

The film comes from Skydance Sports, in association with Optimum Productions, the Michael Jackson Estate’s production company, and NFL Films. Producers include Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach, and Lauren Gaffney of Skydance Sports, John Branca, co-executor of the Michael Jackson Estate, and Amit Dey. Executive producers include Karen Langford, along with Ross Ketover, Ken Rodgers, Keith Cossrow, and Jessica Boddy of NFL Films.

Perfect Timing for Super Bowl LXI

The February 2027 release is no coincidence. Super Bowl LXI takes place February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, just a short drive from the Rose Bowl where Jackson made history. And for the first time, Super Bowl LXI is streaming on Disney+, making Disney+ the place to relive one legendary halftime show and catch the next one.

    When Can You Watch?

Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl premieres in February 2027 on Hulu on Disney+ and ESPN. An exact date hasn’t been announced yet, and we’ll update this post as soon as it is.
