Bollywood actor Imran Khan, who is the nephew of superstar Aamir Khan, has been asked to leave India by October 28.

Mumbai police has issued a notice directing Imran Khan to leave India by October 28. The notice comes after Imran Khan was seen participating in a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

Imran Khan was a part of the protest held at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan along with his girlfriend Lekha and niece. Mumbai Police had also detained the actor in connection with the demonstration.

Why is Imran Khan being asked to leave India?

The Mumbai Police has taken action under provisions of the Immigration Act because he holds US citizenship and had joined a political protest while not being an Indian citizen.

With his participation in the protest in another country, he has violated the conditions attached to his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status.

    What exactly happened ?

On October 10, Imran Khan joined a protest in Mumbai and was a part of the gathering at August Kranti Maidan in support of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).

The demonstration called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations concerning the revision of electoral rolls.

Police detained hundreds of people, including Imran Khan, saying the gathering had not been authorised at that location.

BJP leader Kirit Somaiya had questioned whether a foreign national like Imran Khan was allowed to participate in a political demonstration in India.

He also asked the Mumbai Police to take action, alleging that the actor had violated OCI rules and visa conditions, and called for his detention and deportation.

    What is OCI status?

OCI or Overseas Citizen of India, allows eligible foreign nationals of Indian origin to live in India and enjoy long-term privileges, but it does not make them Indian citizens.

OCI cardholders are subject to specific restrictions.
