Irish pop’s cheesiest moments have been revealed, with Jedward’s appearance on The X Factor and Dustin the Turkey’s Eurovision entry among the highlights.
The poll, conducted by KFC, celebrates some of the most memorable and cringeworthy moments in Irish entertainment history – many of which are finding a new audience thanks to TikTok.
Jedward on The X Factor
Jedward, real names John and Edward Grimes, became household names in 2009 after appearing on The X Factor in the UK.
Known for their towering blonde quiffs, matching outfits and high-energy performances, the Dublin twins divided opinion but quickly became a pop culture phenomenon.
They later went on to represent Ireland at Eurovision twice, finishing eighth in 2011 with Lipstick and 19th in 2012 with Waterline.
Dustin the Turkey Takes on Europe
Another memorable moment was Dustin the Turkey representing Ireland at Eurovision in 2008 with Irelande Douze Pointe.
The puppet, already a familiar face on Irish television, brought plenty of humour to the contest but failed to qualify for the final with his novelty song ‘Irelande Douze Pointe’.
The decision sparked plenty of debate, with some questioning whether a comedy puppet was the right choice to represent the country.
The song poked fun at Eurovision traditions and featured Dustin being wheeled around the stage in a glammed-up shopping trolley.
Despite the novelty factor, the performance received a mixed reaction from the audience in Belgrade, with boos audible during the broadcast.
Boyzone Dance on The Late Late Show
The boyband made their television debut on the show in November 1993, performing a dance routine that has since become famous for its very 1990s choreography and outfits.
At the time, the group were relative newcomers, and their appearance was met with scepticism from presenter Gay Byrne and some members of the studio audience.
Despite the awkward reception, the performance marked the beginning of a hugely successful career for the group.
Boyzone went on to become one of Ireland’s biggest musical exports, scoring numerous hit singles and selling millions of records around the world.
More than three decades later, the clip continues to resurface online, with younger audiences discovering the performance through social media.
What was once an uncomfortable television moment has since become a nostalgic favourite, reminding fans just how far the band has come from their early days.
Nadine Coyle is a Gemini
Nadine Coyle’s infamous “making me a Gemini” moment remains one of the most iconic blunders in Irish television history.
The Derry singer was just 16 when she auditioned for RTÉ’s Popstars in 2001, despite the show requiring contestants to be at least 18.
During an on-camera interview, Nadine accidentally gave her real date of birth, adding that it made her a Gemini, before realising she may have given the game away.
When asked to prove her age, she claimed she couldn’t find her passport, but eventually admitted the truth and was removed from the group Six.
The moment became legendary, with the passport excuse and her panicked reaction living on in Irish pop-culture history. However, it wasn’t the end of her music career.
Nadine later joined Girls Aloud after competing on Popstars: The Rivals in the UK, going on to become part of one of the biggest girl groups of the 2000s.
Crystal Swing Drink Tequila
Crystal Swing became an unlikely internet sensation in 2010 thanks to their song ‘He Drinks Tequila’, with its catchy chorus and unforgettable music video.
The family band from Lisgoold, County Cork, features mother Mary Murray-Burke and her children Derek and Dervla Burke. Their performance of the song quickly went viral, attracting hundreds of thousands of views in just a few days before going on to reach a much wider international audience.
The song’s playful lyrics, particularly the repeated references to tequila, helped make it an instant talking point. The band’s distinctive performance style and Derek’s energetic dancing added to the appeal, making the video a memorable slice of Irish internet history.
Their newfound fame landed them on The Late Late Show with Ryan Tubridy in March 2010, before American chat-show host Ellen DeGeneres invited them to perform on her show in Hollywood.
Crystal Swing even received two standing ovations from the American audience.
What started as a country music performance from a family band in East Cork quickly became a viral phenomenon, proving that sometimes the most unexpected moments can capture the public’s imagination.
KFC says the resurgence of these moments on TikTok proves that Irish audiences still have a soft spot for the wonderfully cheesy side of homegrown entertainment.
Whether it’s questionable dance moves, unforgettable television appearances or Eurovision entries that left the country talking, it seems some moments never really go out of fashion.
