Marvel Studios has spent years tying its films and Disney+ series into one sprawling universe. Now the studio’s head of television admits that approach sometimes asks too much of viewers, and says a lighter touch is coming. Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, television and animation, addressed the issue. He said the studio has learned from several years of making television, and that the lessons point toward connections that feel natural rather than mandatory.

Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum explains new approach to MCU crossovers

Winderbaum acknowledged that mixing movies and shows has produced mixed results. “We’ve thought a lot about the cross-pollination of movies and television shows, and sometimes it’s really cool, sometimes it like feels like a lot for the audience.” The MCU has long rewarded viewers who follow every release, but that commitment has also left casual fans feeling lost. The head suggested the studio now wants to ease that pressure.

In his view, crossovers succeed when they serve the bigger lore and work as loose threads, not heavy requirements. “And we’ve learned a lot in the last few years of making television of [about] when it works. And I think when it works is when it’s about the bigger lore, and it has kind of like tethers to other things like the comic books do, where you don’t feel like everything is connected to everything in such a way where you have to watch it all and obsess.”

Brad Winderbaum also pointed to Marvel’s comic books as the model. Readers there can pick up one character’s series without tracking every other title, yet still find links between them if they look. “It should be a little easier, like the comics, where if you’re a fan of Daredevil, you can watch Daredevil. If you’re a fan of VisionQuest, or the WandaVision trilogy, you can watch that. And if you watch them both, you might find some unexpected connections.”

The comments suggest Marvel wants each project to stand on its own while keeping the shared universe intact. Viewers who follow everything may still spot hidden links, but newcomers should not feel locked out.
