Xbox Labs will explore tools and features for custom game creation, as Microsoft responds to AI-driven experiments such as Halo CE recompilations and Halo 3’s Reclaimer mod. The team aims to help players access games, revive older titles, and become creators.

Microsoft is encouraging the new frontier of user-created gaming with its new Xbox Labs division.

A new trend has arisen over the last few weeks: Gamers are using AI to break open consoles, mash games together, and unlock the potential of classic games. Games like the original Halo CE on Xbox have been recompiled, leading to 128-player matches. Halo 3 just got a big Reclaimer mod. It’s a veritable Wild West out there and Microsoft apparently senses which way the wind is blowing and wants to get ahead of the storm.

Xbox Labs is a way to help cultivate and guide that wild creative spirit that is fueling gaming’s new inflection point. AI is here, and it’s being used to builds is a new team that will facilitate what sounds to be tools and features for gamers and game-creators to use to, well, make custom games

No specifics on how this will work, but Xbox CEO Asha Sharma did share her thinking on Xbox Labs in a recent Xbox Wire post:

What tools or features will Xbox Labs develop for players and game creators?

How could Xbox Labs support community projects that recompile or remix existing games?

How did the Halo CE recompilation enable 128-player matches on original Xbox hardware?

Which AI tools have creators used to decompile or rebuild classic games?

“In recent weeks, we’ve seen games rapidly decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never originally designed to support. Windows PC builds have been translated to run on Apple Silicon or ported to run inside a browser through WebAssembly and WebGPU, the latter now approaching 90% global browser support. Perhaps more surprisingly, we’ve seen many of the biggest games in the world have been remixed into the

“These experiments challenge long-held assumptions about our industry: the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games. While it is hard to predict the future of gaming, it is easy to see the possibilities in making great games easier to access, giving old games new life and allowing more players to become creators and co-creators.

“These are unmistakably good outcomes for players, even when (and sometimes because) they challenge our existing business models.

“To explore these possibilities, I’ve asked Scott to stand-up XBOX LABS, a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists whose job is to turn emerging ideas into things our players and developers can experience. We’ll build in the open, learn from what people do, and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating.”
