VisionQuest First Reviews: A Must-See Marvel Show Full of Surprises and Stellar Performances

Marvel’s VisionQuest premieres on Disney+ this week, and the first reviews of the series are now online. Paul Bettany reprises his role as Vision, continuing the synthezoid’s story after the events of WandaVision and completing a trilogy that also includes Agatha All Along. While some fans may be disappointed at how isolated the show is from the rest of the MCU, VisionQuest is being touted as one of the best installments of the franchise, period, not just those made for the small screen. This is thanks in part to James Spader’s reprisal of Ultron, as well as outstanding storytelling and visuals.

    VisionQuest: Limited Series
    83%

Starring:Paul Bettany, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, James D’Arcy

Here’s what critics are saying about VisionQuest:

Has Marvel made another must-see TV series?

    VisionQuest is a roaring success.
    — Eric Diaz, Nerdist

    VisionQuest is a resounding success.
    — Jake Kleinman, Polygon

VisionQuest is a near-flawless MCU TV series.
    — Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.com

It’s one of the best things to come out of the MCU ever.
    — Lissete Lanuza Sáenz, Fangirlish

VisionQuest is one of Marvel Studios’ stronger outings.
    — Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the Movies

For a series that could be as banal as the ones and zeros that power it, VisionQuest is among the more humane and hopeful things Marvel has produced.
    — Hunter Ingram, TheWrap

Marvel’s track record this year has been promising, and VisionQuest proves to be yet another win for the studio.
    — Taylor Gates, Collider

This is what happens when the MCU takes its time developing a series, and it’s a fitting finale to what WandaVision jump-started.
    — Sherin Nicole, RogerEbert.com

The show doesn’t leave a lasting mark.
    — Alison Herman, Variety

    What makes it a must-watch?

This is superhero TV done right, and even when it’s bloody bonkers, VisionQuest is never anything short of brilliant.
    — Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.com

VisionQuest is fun, which doesn’t sound as effusive as it could be. But after years of illegible Marvel films and series, that is the highest compliment.
    — Hunter Ingram, TheWrap

The series makes for a satisfying addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially because viewers don’t need to watch a gazillion movies and TV series before pressing play on the first episode.
    — Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the Movies

The best part about VisionQuest is the cast.
    — Allison Rose, FlickDirect

This just might be the best-acted entry in the MCU.
    — Mike Ryan, The Hard Pass

The absolute highlight of the series is the mesmerizing dynamic between Paul Bettany and James Spader.
    — Michael Sowell, Nerdspin

The show is especially strong when Bettany and Ruaridh Mollica get a chance to share a screen.
    — Lissete Lanuza Sáenz, Fangirlish

    Will it satisfy MCU fans?

The more cerebral VisionQuest digs so deep into Marvel lore that casual viewers will need to keep a Wikipedia link open. And it may leave fan-addicts giddy.
    — Bob Strauss, San Francisco Chronicle

[The MCU] rights its course with VisionQuest, a follow-up to its initial small-screen triumph that’s all about the search for identity.
    — Nick Schager, The Daily Beast

The origin of AIs in the MCU comes as a surprise that deepens this world’s mythology while addressing several unanswered questions from the past.
    — Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.com

Fans of the franchise are being rewarded.
    — Sherin Nicole, RogerEbert.com

The question remains if MCU fans and general viewers care enough about Vision and the characters in his orbit.
    — Julian Roman, BlackFilmandTV.com

[It] gets a little too sentimental, which I’m sure won’t appeal to every MCU fan.
    — Allison Rose, FlickDirect

While WandaVision fans are sure to be thrilled, those eagerly awaiting a follow-up to various threads in Agatha All Along may not be quite as happy.
    — Taylor Gates, Collider

How does it compare to other Marvel shows?

VisionQuest is one of Marvel’s best TV shows, and makes a case for the WandaVision “trilogy” as the best MCU trilogy of all.
    — Eric Diaz, Nerdist

VisionQuest doesn’t boast a foundational hook as intriguing as WandaVision’s sitcom fantasy, and it rarely tries to duplicate that which worked so well for its precursor.
    — Nick Schager, The Daily Beast

While this series does wrap up the WandaVision/Agatha All Along trilogy, I didn’t find it as good as the first two properties.
    — Allison Rose, FlickDirect

While it lands as a decently close second behind the magic of WandaVision, it stands tall as an essential character study within the MCU.
    — Michael Sowell, Nerdspin

    How is the action?

VisionQuest delivers a healthy amount of action, including a superb clash between Vision and Ultron that’s been glimpsed in the trailers.
    — Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.com

The action scenes suffice with moments of gory violence that does add an unexpected shock value. But don’t expect nonstop thrills.
    — Julian Roman, BlackFilmandTV.com

There are still large-scale action sequences… but the series is most concerned with philosophical ideas about what it means to be human.
    — Taylor Gates, Collider

    Does the show look good?

Visually, the series is breathtaking… The production features magnificent, full-scale set designs and incredible cinematography.
    — Michael Sowell, Nerdspin

VisionQuest is a masterwork of production design and costume design.
    — Alexander Zalben, Comic Book Club

The attention to detail, especially in the Mindspace set, is simply stunning, with props that both wink at the audience and immerse them in this unique world.
    — Taylor Gates, Collider

The same artistic aesthetic that made WandaVision so intriguing is more stylized and detailed here. Showrunner Terry Matalas deserves credit for every episode looking phenomenal.
    — Julian Roman, BlackFilmandTV.com

    How is the writing?

Some of the MCU’s best… It feels like the story matters.
    — Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.com

The writing is sophisticated and clever.
    — Taylor Gates, Collider

The core brilliance of the writing manifests in Vision’s incredibly complicated relationship with his son, Tommy.
    — Michael Sowell, Nerdspin

The series can at times feel like it’s holding viewers’ hands. However, considering its inherent complications, that’s not particularly unwelcome.
    — Nick Schager, The Daily Beast

    Are there any surprises?

The series took me in some directions I wasn’t expecting.
    — Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the Movies

There are genuine surprises, even for long-time Marvel fans.
    — Tessa Smith, Mama’s Geeky

VisionQuest repeatedly subverts expectations, and every time you think you know where it’s going, the story turns everything on its head with jaw-dropping twists.
    — Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.com

Turnabouts, twists, and callbacks come at us fast in VisionQuest.
    — Sherin Nicole, RogerEbert.com

    How is Paul Bettany’s performance?

Paul Bettany delivers his best performance yet as the conflicted android.
    — Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.com

He is just as brilliant as ever in VisionQuest.
    — Tessa Smith, Mama’s Geeky

    Paul Bettany is electric.
    — Hunter Ingram, TheWrap

Bettany is spectacular, delivering a deeply emotional deconstruction of Vision.
    — Michael Sowell, Nerdspin

Paul Bettany puts on an absolute masterclass as Vision.
    — Jake Kleinman, Polygon

What about James Spader as the “human” version of Ultron?

The show’s secret weapon is James Spader.
    — Bob Strauss, San Francisco Chronicle

Spader delivers one of the best performances in the entire MCU.
    — Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.com

James Spader delivers an epic return that is a true gift for MCU fans.
    — Michael Sowell, Nerdspin

It’s extraordinary to watch him feast on what could be – and sometimes are – amusing but terribly cheesy lines like, “The power of code compels you.”
    — Hunter Ingram, TheWrap

It’s Spader who steals the proverbial show.
    — Nick Schager, The Daily Beast

Spader steals the first four episodes because he not only has the funniest lines of anyone, but he also delivers them with the perfect tonal quality.
    — Allison Rose, FlickDirect

Are there any other noteworthy performances?

Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Maximoff (Speed). He stands out as a true revelation.
    — Michael Sowell, Nerdspin

Mollica is simply fantastic… It’s impossible not to be moved by his performance.
    — Taylor Gates, Collider

Mollica and Miller are the revelations here — bar none. Yet that praise comes with a nod to Lauren Morais’s kleptomaniac Lisa, and Hampshire’s E.D.I.T.H.
    — Sherin Nicole, RogerEbert.com

Those who might only know Emily Hampshire from Schitt’s Creek… are in for a lovely surprise here, as she plays E.D.I.T.H. with the gung-ho delight of a smiling nuclear warhead.
    — Liz Shannon Miller, Consequence

Does the series stick the landing?

The final two episodes had me in tears. There is a really intriguing mystery at the core of it all that completely blew me away. I thought I knew, and I had no idea at all.
    — Tessa Smith, Mama’s Geeky

I found the second half less interesting than the first… The ending doesn’t wrap everything up as well as I had hoped.
    — Allison Rose, FlickDirect

The series should have concluded after the sixth episode. What happens after is just a bridge too far that dilutes the show’s best tenets.
    — Julian Roman, BlackFilmandTV.com

Are there any other complaints about the show?

The only very minor complaint that springs to mind from this eight-episode masterwork is the comic book fan in me wishing there had perhaps been a few more scenes with Vision in his synthezoid form.
    — Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.com

If there is a flaw, it lies in the narrative substance of the supporting villain characters… These antagonists ultimately feel more like convenient plot devices than fully fleshed out threats, moving the script along without generating genuine tension.
    — Michael Sowell, Nerdspin

There is a lot happening, and it becomes hard to keep track of things at times. Sometimes we don’t see what certain characters are up to for an episode or two, only for them to pop back in and stir the pot later.
    — Tessa Smith, Mama’s Geeky

The problem is that the series drags across its eight episodes, continually introducing confounding twists that distract from its central theme.
    — Julian Roman, BlackFilmandTV.com

I’m not particularly sure why we needed it, as I don’t believe it gives us any insight into what is to come in Avengers: Doomsday.
    — Allison Rose, FlickDirect

Does it offer any crumbs at all for the future of the MCU?

It’s an exciting new beginning for the MCU.
    — Taylor Gates, Collider

As the final MCU project to hit screens before Marvel mega-event Avengers: Doomsday, it’s also a little surprising how disconnected from the wider MCU story VisionQuest feels, with no sense that any of this will one day feed into the bigger picture.
    — Jordan Farley, GamesRadar+

As far as I know, you don’t need to watch VisionQuest to understand the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. This isn’t “required” MCU viewing – but also, isn’t that kind of nice?
    — Mike Ryan, The Hard Pass

Matalas focuses on wrapping up his narrative rather than laying the groundwork for Vision and company’s potential contributions to forthcoming adventures — a smart tack that keeps it focused through to a reasonably satisfying conclusion.
    — Nick Schager, The Daily Beast

VisionQuest premieres on Disney+ on October 14, 2026.
