Phasmophobia’s Crimson Eye Is Back, and VR Players Get It on a Rebuilt Body for the First Time

Phasmophobia‘s Crimson Eye event started Thursday and runs through November 1. Nina Castillo put it on our Halloween calendar on Friday with all eight maps and the reward list, so I am not going to recite them. I want to talk about the body you are wearing when you walk in. This is the first Crimson Eye since Kinetic Games threw out the game’s VR character rig and built a new one.

Two patches flat players had no reason to notice

The swap landed on August 25 in v0.19, and Nina took it apart that week: a new skeleton, arms matched to your own reach, ten VR fixes of which five were doors. She also listed three VR bugs Kinetic still had marked as open. Head gear knocked off when someone shut a door on you. Blank profile pictures in the lobby. A ragdoll that folded up wrong if you died with Immersive Animations switched on.

All three are in the fixed column of the September 10 patch. Sixteen days. That same patch added a VR Belt Offset setting, which slides your equipment belt higher or lower on your body, and it moved where your hand sits on the tier one D.O.T.S. projector and on every tier of flashlight, photo camera and video camera, with a note from Kinetic that “more equipment will be improved with future updates.”

If you have only played this on a monitor, a belt height slider sounds like nothing. In a headset it is the difference between glancing down for the thermometer and patting your own hip like you lost your keys.

Why the red weeks belong in a headset

Kinetic’s event post does not say much about what the Blood Moon changes. You hunt down totems, you finish investigations and optional objectives for points, and you do it, quoting the post, “all while under the threat of Blood Moon weather, increasing the challenge you’ll face from ghosts.” That is the entire description. Harder ghosts, redder houses.

So why bother strapping a screen to your face for it? Because Phasmophobia listens to your microphone, and the store page is not shy about it: “The Ghosts are listening!” On a monitor you are a person at a desk asking a spirit box how old it is. In a headset you are standing in that hallway with the box in your actual hand, asking with your actual mouth, and the part of your brain that knows better takes a second to show up. I have played a lot of VR horror. Very little of it gets me with something as cheap as my own voice.
