“Wait, What?” Charlie Cox Jokes About ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Ending at New York Comic Con

Brandon Davis had the microphone on the Javits Center stage Thursday afternoon, and the sentence he said out loud was that the next season of Daredevil would be the show’s last. The boos came up fast, the way they only do when a room already knows the news and has been waiting for someone from the company to say it. Charlie Cox sat between Krysten Ritter and Finn Jones, let the noise peak, and played dumb. “Wait, what?” he said.

Two words, and the joke lands because Cox is the one actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who owes his entire second act to people refusing to accept a cancellation. Marvel had just told the hall that Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 is where Matt Murdock’s Disney+ run stops, and the man playing him answered by pointing straight at the fan campaign that resurrected the character.

What Cox Actually Said, and What He Did Not

Per Deadline’s Glenn Garner, who was in the hall, Cox followed the gag with a warning dressed up as a compliment. “All I’ll say is, I imagine the ‘Save Daredevil’ campaign will be gearing up for round two,” he said, before adding that nobody involved wants to invite the wrath of the Save Daredevil people. Nothing in that answer promises anything past Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, and he did not hint that a fourth exists. The distinction matters, because a shrug and a joke are not a renewal, and Cox has been careful with this question before.

He was less careful with IGN after the panel. Asked whether he is finished playing Matt Murdock, Cox gave the least reassuring answer available, which was “Don’t know, man. I don’t know… It might be. It might be.” He also told IGN to “get the Save Daredevil campaign on the horn,” and called the movement “my true superpower.” For an actor who has spent a decade being asked when the character comes back, that is as close to a public request as the job allows.

    Why the Show Is Ending

The Hollywood Reporter broke this on September 21, and FanBolt covered the initial report the following morning. THR’s reporting came with a second detail that explains more than the cancellation itself, which is that Marvel had quietly let showrunner Dario Scardapane go during post-production on the final season. His contract was up and did not get renewed. Studios do not part ways with the person finishing a season unless the relationship has already stopped being useful to them.

The numbers were not helping either. Luminate measured U.S. viewership on the second season at roughly half of what the first drew, and Season 2 had a harder sell baked into it, ending with Murdock burning his secret identity to take down Wilson Fisk and landing in prison for it. Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 wrapped filming over the summer and sat in post while all of this played out. Eight episodes are <a href="https://comicvibe.com/how-to-watch-nascar-live-at-charlotte-in-2026-chase-schedule/” title=”How to watch NASCAR live at Charlotte in 2026 Chase, schedule”>scheduled for March 2027, so nothing Cox said at the Javits Center can change a frame of what ships.

The Defenders Reunion Marvel Is Leading With

Marvel brought something to trade for the bad news. The panel confirmed that all four Defenders are in the final season, with Ritter back as Jessica Jones, Finn Jones as Danny Rand, and Mike Colter returning as Luke Cage. Colter could not make the panel, which left Cox, Ritter and Jones to sell the reunion from the stage. “The first time we were all back together again, it was like 2016 all over again,” Cox said of the shoot.

The teaser, which Marvel has not put online, opens with Jessica, Luke and Danny being handed police badges, and Jessica asking why there are only three. Murdock narrates from a cell, shreds his prison uniform into a headwrap and a mask, and goes to work on the other inmates. Dex Poindexter turns up in a Bullseye suit that finally looks like the comics. It is a strong reel, and it is also a studio closing out a team-up Netflix launched back in 2017.

Cox and Ritter were on a New York Comic Con stage last October selling Season 2 to this same crowd. A year later the pitch is Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 and a door closing behind it, which is a strange thing to ask people to applaud. In twenty years on this beat I have watched exactly one fan campaign actually move a studio, and it was this one. That campaign had a target, because Netflix had killed a show people were still watching. Marvel is finishing a story on its own schedule, having already shown the showrunner the door, so what would round two be asking for?
