At New York Comic Con, Jim Lee, Publisher, President and CCO of DC Comics, just announced a third volume in the Justice League Vs. Godzilla Vs. Kong series, this time going Multiversal. As Earth 3’s evil Justice League equivalent, The Crime Syndicate bring their own Earth 3 versions of Godzilla and King Kong.
It kicks off as a small group of remaining, failing heroes on Earth 3, including a reworked Apache Chief from the old Super Friends cartoons, come to the DC Earth to recruit Godzilla. Jim Lee knows there are issues regarding the Apache Chief concept and wants to address them. Just as Godzilla was a natural cultural response after the nuclear bombs dropped on Japan, Apache Indians have also experienced nuclear bomb testing, so DC Comics is creating a new Bat Kaiju in the DC Universe connected to the Apache people.
Earth 3 is DC’s longest-running “everything is backwards” playground. On this Earth, the heroes lost. Or rather, the villains won so thoroughly that they became the status quo. Ultraman. Owlman. Superwoman. Power Ring. Johnny Quick. The Crime Syndicate of America. The concept has been around since the Silver Age, when Gardner Foxand Mike Sekowsky first flipped the Justice League into their evil counterparts. Over the decades, it’s been rebooted, reimagined, and occasionally buried under the weight of whatever Crisis was happening at the time. Grant Morrisonand Frank Quitely gave them a particularly nasty, stylish workout in JLA: Earth 2.Geoff Johns and others have used it as a pressure cooker for the main DCU whenever they needed to remind readers that things could always be worse. And every few years, someone at DC looks at the sales charts, remembers that people love a good inverted Superman, and dusts the place off again. And now? We get to see their Godzilla and their King Kong…
