One of Nana Patekar’s most recognisable characters remains Uday Shetty from Welcome (2007).
Legendary actor Nana Patekar’s demise has left a huge void among his fans, admirers and people from different walks of life. Tributes began pouring in on Thursday morning, soon after the news of his death was confirmed.
Nana Patekar made his Hindi film debut in the 1978 movie Gaman and has since been one of the most versatile and popular actors in Indian cinema. He has played different roles in various genres, including Parinda and Krantiveer, Ab Tak Chhappan, and Welcome.
Nana’s great performances have given rise to some of the most memorable dialogues and scenes. These moments have now resurfaced online as fans recreate his legendary dialogues on social media.
The actor’s internet legacy includes several films, which were remixed, reposted, and turned into memes and reels.
“Control Uday, control”-Welcome
One of Nana Patekar’s most recognisable characters remains Uday Shetty from Welcome (2007). The actor played the intimidating yet eccentric gangster with such conviction that even his expressions became meme material.
His exchanges with Majnu, played by Anil Kapoor, continue to circulate on social media nearly two decades after the film’s release. Among the most popular is the iconic, “Control Uday, control”, along with “Control Majnu, control”.

Nana’s expressions and comic timing made Uday Shetty one of the most memorable characters in the film, turning several of his scenes into evergreen internet content.
Another line from Welcome that found a life of its own online is “Seh lenge thoda”. What was originally part of the film’s comic world eventually became a phrase regularly used in memes and social media posts.
The dialogue resonated with the general audience due to its straight-from-the-shoulder quality and has since been recycled in various forms, ranging from everyday gripes to situations where one feels obligated to endure.
“Aloo le-lo, kaanda le-lo”
Uday Shetty’s transformation from a sharply dressed gangster into a vegetable vendor is another scene that continues to be shared online.
Dressed impeccably in a suit, Nana’s character suddenly starts shouting, “Aloo le-lo, kaanda le-lo.” The sheer absurdity of the situation, combined with Nana’s expressions and delivery, made the scene perfect meme material.
Even years later, the clip continues to surface whenever social media users want to make fun of pitching, selling or promoting something in an increasingly competitive world.
The unforgettable dance showdown
Nana Patekar’s comic side was not restricted to Welcome. In Tum Milo Toh Sahi (2010), one of the film’s memorable sequences featured his character getting into a bizarre dance showdown with a transgender character asking him for money.

The unusual setup and Nana’s impeccable comic timing made the sequence stand out. It was another example of how the actor could bring humour to even an unexpected situation without relying solely on dialogue.
A legacy that crosses generations
Nana Patekar’s work transcended just the films themselves. He starred in a variety of genres including dramas, action movies, and comedies, taking on very different roles in each.
As a millennial or Gen Z’er, chances are you’ve seen some moments or heard some quotes from his work before. Even if you haven’t seen all of his films, you’re probably familiar with some of his work through Uday Shetty’s catchphrases, iconic performances and the number of memes he’s inspired.
Nana Patekar was last seen in Vishal Bhardwaj’s O’Romeo, starring Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri. He also appeared in a cameo in Anil Kapoor’s Subedaar.
The actor had several projects in the pipeline, including Shakti Shalini and The Confessions of Mary. While his upcoming work will now be seen in a different light, the characters and moments he has already given audiences will continue to live on through his films, television clips and social media.
