India’s telecom revolution has transformed the humble mobile phone into a tool for entrepreneurship, content creation and gaming, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on October 8, highlighting how affordable data and improved connectivity are creating new opportunities for millions of Indians.
Inaugurating the 10th India Mobile Congress in New Delhi, Modi said mobile phones have evolved far beyond communication devices and are now helping fuel growth across the creator economy, gaming and digital entertainment sectors.
“The mobile phone has democratised the content-creation industry in India,” Modi said. Millions of people are earning livelihood through content creation, with the industry now worth thousands of crores.
The Prime Minister credited the expansion of telecom infrastructure over the past decade —including the rollout of mobile towers in remote regions, wider optical fibre connectivity and cheaper data — for creating a new digital ecosystem.
Among the sectors benefiting most is gaming.
Modi said more than 50 crore Indians are estimated to be connected to gaming, with participation growing rapidly among young users in tier 2 and 3 cities.
But the opportunity extends beyond playing games. “Young people are not only playing games, they are competing in esports, creating gaming content and building gaming businesses. In India, a mobile phone has become a gaming console as well as a content creation studio,” he said.
Modi also pointed to the role of mobile connectivity in enabling regional content growth. Faster internet speeds and affordable data have helped video-sharing platforms, social media services and regional OTT platforms reach audiences in urban as well as rural India.
The spread of digital infrastructure has also reduced language barriers, enabling creators to build audiences in local languages and helping regional content gain wider acceptance.
As digital adoption accelerates, Modi said India must simultaneously strengthen the security framework to support the next phase of growth.
