Dulce Rosalina, the Vasco fan who inspired women and transformed Brazilian fan culture

Before every match at São Januário, a solitary banner appears hours before kick-off. It honours Dulce Rosalina Ponce de León, the Vasco devotee who transformed fan culture and helped women claim space on the terraces.
Born in Rio de Janeiro near the Ponte dos Marinheiros in 1934, she became, 70 years ago, the first woman to lead an organised supporters’ group in Brazil, the Torcida Organizada do Vasco. According to Globo.com, the banner marks where she once stood with the TOV.

Her first act in charge was to raise 200,000 cruzeiros to help build two basketball courts at São Januário. Early TOV meetings were held at her home in Rio Comprido, where her door was always open to Vasco fans.
She introduced confetti and streamers to the terraces and popularised drum sections. Dulce led the TOV from 1956 to 1976, then founded Renovascão.
Respected by players and directors, she attended club events and training. After Brazil’s under-20s won their first world title in 1983, she embraced Geovani at the airport and coined his nickname, ‘Pequeno Príncipe’.
It is said players once threatened to skip a clássico with Flamengo after police detained her at the Maracanã for confetti and alleged contempt. She was released, and Vasco won 4-2.
Her story now links Vasco, history and samba. She will be the theme of Carnival 2027 for G.R.E.S. União Cruzmaltina, which competes in Rio’s Série Bronze. Dulce Rosalina died in January 2004, and a nearby street later took her name.
