Returning approximately 30 years after its original 1994 TV anime, ‘Magic Knight Rayearth’ has released preview stills, a plot summary, and a teaser trailer for Episode 1 four days ahead of its premiere.
Posted on the official X account and video channel on October 3, the title of Episode 1 is “From Another World” (異世界より). Hikaru Shidou, a middle school student visiting Tokyo Tower on a school field trip, meets Umi Ryuzaki and Fuu Hououji, who attend different schools. The moment the three strangers lock eyes, a voice echoes, “Help this world, legendary Magic Knights,” and as they are pulled into an alternate space, an unfamiliar world—Cephiro—unfolds before them.
The new Magic Knight Rayearth anime was announced in 2024 as a new project celebrating the 30th anniversary of the original TV anime’s premiere.
The original TV anime Magic Knight Rayearth, which aired in 1994, was based on the manga of the same name by CLAMP. Although serialized in a shojo manga magazine, the original work gained widespread popularity by blending isekai fantasy with giant robots. Consequently, alongside ‘Cardcaptor Sakura’, it is regarded as one of CLAMP’s defining works that brought the group into mainstream popularity. Featuring giant robots, the franchise joined ‘Super Robot Wars T’—where magic and alternate worlds took center stage—and was also featured in its sequel, ‘Super Robot Wars 30’.
The anime adaptation was also highly praised for its direction, music, and distinct narrative twists that diverged from the original manga, establishing itself as one of Japan’s representative anime of the early-to-mid 1990s. Its opening theme, “Yuzurenai Negai” by Naomi Tamura, became a million-selling hit and stayed in the top 10 on the Oricon chart for 9 consecutive weeks.
Scheduled for release in 2026, the new anime is directed by Yui Miura, director of ‘Granblue Fantasy the Animation Season 2’, with Satomi Watanabe handling character design and Yuki Kajiura composing the music. The main voice cast was announced on stage at AnimeJapan 2026 in March: Ayane Sakura as Hikaru, Rumi Okubo as Umi, and Rie Takahashi as Fuu.
