Halo Studios Denies There Was Creator Blacklist As The Halo Fallout Gets Messy

In the wake of Xbox gutting Halo Studios and moving the franchise under Activision, content creators as well as current and former Halo devs have started talking about the series publicly online. That’s led to some messy drama and accusations, including a claim that Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries) put some content creators on a blacklist. However, Halo’s community director says this rumor is “annoyingly false.”

On September 28, YouTuber and Halo insider Rebs Gaming reported he’d been told that fellow Halo content creator HiddenXperia had been blacklisted by the studio for “being critical,” and further claimed that the leadership team behind the franchise was closely watching the kinds of videos other creators were making and blacklisting anyone who wasn’t positive, or a “Yes sir kind of guy.” When creator Destin Legarie shared Rebs Gaming’s tweet about all of this and said it was “disappointing,” Halo Studios community director Brian Jarrard replied and denied all of it.

Jarrard explained that the reason Halo Studios hasn’t directly addressed all of the rumors and claims floating around online about the series and its development is that there are “too many,” but this particular claim is “annoyingly false,” so he decided to push back on it.

“There was no ‘leadership blacklist,’” said Jarrard on Twitter. “Sure, some people and partners understandably don’t like negative/critical sentiment or coverage—particularly with things like review copies/early access, which are inherently intended to drive (good) awareness. HiddenXperia’s video actually directly led to some specific AI improvements at the finish line. Who knows who might have or have not been included ‘next time’; there was no next time even on deck. It’s all just speculative and baseless.”

Jarrard also stated that big game development is complicated and involves a lot of people. Just because a Halo game shipped with features some fans and creators disliked, that doesn’t mean the studio was only listening to “yes-men in the community.”

“Overall project and stakeholder vision and intent, real-world constraints (time/res are all reasons why things end up the way they do that any of us may not like in the end result,” asserted the community director

“In my experience in some of these groups, feedback was measured and mature, and there were countless debates, but certainly not just glazing for the sake of glazing. Personal opinions vary as much as those across this passionate community. Additionally, something like a council group is but one vector of insights that goes along with traditional user research (administered hands-on tests and focus surveys), inputs like support tickets, playtesting, partners, and even anecdotal community feedback—positive and negative (videos, posts, etc.).”

“I’m grateful for everyone who has shared feedback in a respectful, constructive manner wherever and however it occurred,” said Jarrard. “It’s a gift, and Halo is fortunate to have such a passionate, longstanding community. I look forward to seeing how community and player insights shape the future of Halo.”

Of course, this hasn’t stopped some in the Halo community from going after Halo Studios, its devs, and Jarrard. Some creators claim he’s lying or not telling the whole truth. And when Jarrard later tweeted a warning to creators to check their NDAs with Microsoft before making videos that might get them in trouble, some took it as a threat designed to scare people away from telling the truth.

“That wasn’t the intention at all, but now I see how it could be interpreted that way,” replied Jarrard to someone claiming it was a threat. “Idk if anyone cares or what, just lookin out for some creators.”
