Andrew Garfield got ‘so scared’ playing basketball with Woody Harrelson: ‘He’s fiercely competitive’

The Amazing Spider-Man actor recently shared an unfortunate memory of trying and failing to ball with Woody Harrelson during an appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast.

“I was playing with Woody, who I love, and I’ve been a fan of forever,” he said. “And White Men Can’t Jump is one of those all-time great movies. And it’s just one of my all-time favorite performances.”

Garfield was thrilled to show off his skills against the star of one of the most iconic basketball movies of all time. “I was so excited to play with him,” he recalled. “And then as soon as we got on the court, I just froze.”

TheEyes of Tammy Faye actor struggled to keep his composure when game time arrived. “I was like the 7-year-old at the party that just wants to go home,” Garfield said. “I was just so scared. I folded. I fully froze and folded.”

Garfield did ultimately work up the courage to play with Harrelson and the others on the court, but he wasn’t pleased with his performance. “I played really badly,” he admitted. “And I just want to apologize to everyone at that game. I love Woody so much, and I’d been wanting to play with him [for] so long, and it was finally our time.”

The Tick, Tick… Boom! actor remains in awe of Harrelson’s athletic prowess. “He still plays great,” Garfield said. “He’s taking really good care of himself. But he’s fiercely competitive. And I love it. I absolutely love it.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Garfield shared his admiration for his Spider-Man costar Sally Field. “She’s one of the great people alive. Or dead, for that matter,” he said. “She’s so weirdly still humble. It’s a weird thing. I would say she has legend status.”

He continued, “Sally is someone that you just feel like you’re with the best friend aunt you could ever wish for.”

Garfield said “one of the great highlights” of his career was presenting Field with a lifetime achievement award at the SAG Awards in 2023. “I felt so lucky,” he said. “I almost said no because I just didn’t think that I could handle it. Because it was such an honor, because she is so beloved, and rightly so, and she is so beautifully extraordinary and ordinary. She honors her ordinariness in such an inspiring [way]. I really can’t believe I can even talk about her in this fashion.”
