Jennifer Lawrence is heading into the unknown.
The Silver Linings Playbook actress will star in The Flood, the new film from Weapons filmmaker Zach Cregger, Entertainment Weekly can confirm. Described as a sci-fi thriller, the film will release in theaters on Aug. 11, 2028.
Cregger is writing, producing, and directing the film, and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment is producing with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment.
“Jennifer is one of a kind, and I’m beyond excited to see her in this role,” Cregger said in a press release.
Very little is known about the plot of The Flood at this point, but Cregger has alluded to the film taking place in outer space in previous interviews.
“Flood, I kind of came up with the idea because I was very excited to work with Steven Spielberg, and we had a weird situation where there was a short window where I could have an idea and we could link up together,” Cregger told Deadline earlier this month. “So I had like five days, basically, to have an idea. And I entered a mental state I have yet to ever repeat or do prior, where I was in some sort of frenzy where I was just like, ‘[I’ve] got to have an idea for Steven Spielberg!'”
Cregger said that inspiration struck when he was watching a different sci-fi movie with his wife, which featured a character “entering an abandoned spaceship” on screen. “My wife was like, ‘There’s nothing scarier than being trapped in space,'” he remembered. “And then this character goes into the ship and they find something that was pretty weird and scared them. And I was thinking, ‘What would be weirder and scarier than that? What could happen in this scenario that would freak me out more than this?'”
He continued, “It’s never happened to me before, but in a flash, I had the whole movie explode in front of my eyes. I just knew what it could be; I think I probably stood up and was like, ‘I have it!’ It was a total ridiculous moment, but I love it.”
Cregger told The Big Picture podcast that he began writing The Flood at the same time that he wrote Resident Evil, which recently debuted in theaters. “Flood is very cerebral, it’s more sophisticated, it feels more like Weapons,” he said. “It’s much more like something that [I can]maybe put on my tombstone, you know? AndResident Evilwas this little playtime to just break up the strain of writing Flood.”
