One of the things I miss most about living in Los Angeles is attending early test screenings. Not just because I’m a huge horror fan who wants to see things as soon as possible – and see how they change along the way – but because you get to meet the filmmakers before their movies reach the masses.
It’s how I met Michael Dougherty before Trick ’r Treat was released and started telling you what a masterpiece that movie was going to be. It’s also how I discovered a little indie darling called Reeker back in 2005.
Dave Payne’s film has become something of a hidden gem, buried deep on the imaginary shelves of the Blockbuster era. And if you missed it, this Halloween is a pretty great time to fix that.
With the original distribution licenses expired, the filmmakers have reclaimed the opportunity to present Reeker and its sequel No Man’s Land: The Rise of Reeker their way, with new artwork, digital remasters, and some appropriately ridiculous collectible packaging.
According to the official Reeker website, both films have been remastered in 4K Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos audio for streaming and download. They’re available to rent or purchase through Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube Movies, with Tubi adding both films for free, ad-supported viewing on October 19!
The original follows a group of friends trapped at an isolated desert motel, where a foul-smelling entity begins killing them in bizarre ways. It’s a really great low-budget indie horror movie, and one I’d put on your must-see list for the season.
The second film brings criminals and the father-and-son lawmen pursuing them together at an abandoned desert motel, where surviving the Reeker becomes everybody’s problem.
The original received its U.S. home-video release through Paramount, while the follow-up arrived through Lionsgate’s Ghost House Underground label. Now they’re being packaged together for collectors, too.
And yes, they’re leaning all the way into the smell.
The new physical-media options include:
- Two-DVD set — $29.95: Both films with a Scratch-n-Whiff collectible sleeve.
- Promo box — $39.95: Two Scratch-n-Whiff DVD screeners in NTSC format, two Reeker air fresheners, a nose plug, durian candy, and a Reeker wristband.
Both packages include free shipping within the contiguous United States. These physical editions are DVDs; the 4K remasters are being offered digitally.
