Tom Holland Reveals Spider-Man Pitch That Was Too Gruesome for Brand New Day
After just two months in theaters,Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now the third-highest grossing movie of all time after Avatarand Avengers: Endgame with nearly $2.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales.
Clearly, there’s still a massive appetite for Marvel’s friendly neighborhood wall-crawler, and Tom Holland’s youthful and disarming take on Peter Parker has a lot to do with it.
The actor’s uncanny talent for spinning webs and box office cash has not been lost on comic book legend Frank Miller, whose tenure at the Big Two publishers gave us seminal touchstones like Daredevil: Born Againand The Dark Knight Returns.

The runaway success of Brand New Day led to an overall production deal between Sony Pictures and director Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Wonder Man), who took over the Spidey reins from Jon Watts. While the creative pact only stipulates that Cretton will develop movies to produce at the studiock as director for a fifth Spider-Man adventure starring Holland
Aside from grappling with the universal amnesia caused by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, Brand New Day also set the table for the MCU’s long-awaited take on the X-Men by way of Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey.
A reboot of the mutant squad is already in the works from *Thunderboltsdirector Jake Schreier, with Christopher Abbott (Professor Charles Xavier), Inde Navarrette (Rogue), Kit Connor (Cyclops), Asa Germann (Angel), Samara Weaving (Emma Frost) Maya Boyd (Storm) and Adam Driver (Mr. Sinister) already cast alongside Sink.
Schreier’s untitled X-Men film is slated to hit theaters on May 5, 2028.
