The creator of Captain Canuck is back in town to sign, sketch and promote the Reborn graphic novel.
Author/illustrator Richard Comely will be the guest artist at Ebenezer’s (3110 29th St.) Friday, Sept. 25, from 3 to 6 p.m.
Last year, 2025, marked the 50th anniversary of the first edition of Captain Canuck, which is making a comeback.
Since the Comelys moved from Ontario to Abbotsford in October 2024, Fraser Valley Auto Mall has licensed Captain Canuck to promote car sales, and Vancouver Transit released its Captain Canuck TransLink card and passenger information program.
A Captain Canuck story, starring Adam Beach and produced by VVS, is now in production and will air on Canada Day 2027.
A year ago, the cover illustration of Captain Canuck confronting U.S. President Trump flashed around the world. The cover and poster artwork piqued the imagination and hearts of Canadians and many Americans and were featured in international news coverage.
The few remaining copies of the history-making Captain Canuck vs. Donald Trump poster by Comely will be available at Ebenezer’s signings along with original art for the Reborn TPB and hard-to-find Captain Canuck collectibles.
Comely was in Vernon in April at Comic Con, signing copies of the poster. Prior to his visit he told The Morning Star about one man he credits for pushing him to create the character.
“I met a fellow named Ron Lieshman at church and he is a cartoonist,” Comely said of the Toon A Day creator. “He is the one who put the idea into my head to do a comic book series. He basically said, ‘there should be a Canadian superhero.’
“Without him, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have done it,” said Comely who was working in fashion design at the time.
The Captain Canuck Reborn Trade Paperback is being readied for release at the Winnipeg Comic Con on Oct. 30.
Captain Canuck has been featured on the cover of Time magazine (April 28, 1997), The Los Angeles Times, Toronto Star, The National Post, The Globe & Mail, Winnipeg Tribune, Sudbury Star, Walrus, and many other newspapers and periodicals.
Comely’s book The Captain And I, covering the history of Captain Canuck will be released in summer 2027.
