Lakota has been a mainstay of Stokes Croft for over three decades now. The Bristol nightclub has borne witness to a sea of change: demolition, construction, the closure of local businesses – including neighbouring nightclub ‘Blue Mountain’ – and the opening of new ones.
Having experienced its own share of existential threat in recent years, its involvement with the release of Stokes Croft 92 –a satirical video game which pokes fun at the gentrification of Bristol and monopolisation of its culture – feels appropriate.
The game, directed by Hywel Gregory (who also happens to work at Lakota) is equal-parts love letter and lamentation for Stokes Croft.

In it, Gregory has lovingly recreated the street, including many staples of the area such as Banksy’s ‘Mild Mild West’ mural, The Bell, Cuts and Creps and, of course, Lakota.
It has an aesthetic resembling a retro, ‘Beat ’em up’ arcade game of yesteryear, while highlighting problems all too familiar to the modern club-goer.
A caustic prologue mocks the rampant inflation and predatory landlords which make culture inaccessible to those who create it, while describing the re as “the last street in Bristol that hasn’t become a ‘concept’”.
Players then make their way along a virtual representation of the street, dodging e-scooters, meeting locals and fighting with ‘clipboard operators’ who charge exorbitant prices for entry into clubs and local haunts such as the Bearpit and Turbo Island.
Earlier this year, Gregory said: “The world that Lakota was born into doesn’t exist anymore.
“Independent venues face pressures that would’ve been unimaginable twenty years ago.”
This reads like a mission statement for Stokes Croft 92: it is an urgent reminder of how the area has helped shape Bristol’s cultural landscape over the years, and what is at risk of being lost with its dissolution.
