Kojima Productions founder Hideo Kojima confirmed Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård as the lead protagonist of Physint, the studio’s upcoming action-espionage game, during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast. Skarsgård is known for his roles in It, John Wick: Chapter 4, and Nosferatu.
The announcement arrived alongside a new teaser poster showing Skarsgård next to co-star Charlee Fraser, with the tagline “The next Cold War begins.” Kojima said he personally shot the reference photo used for the poster.
Ensemble cast and performance technology
Skarsgård leads an ensemble that also includes Charlee Fraser (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), Don Lee (The Eternals), and Japanese actress Minami Hamabe. Kojima confirmed that costume fittings, body scans, and camera tests with Skarsgård and Fraser took place earlier this year, using Epic Games’ MetaHuman technology to capture facial performances in real time.
Kojima described Physint as the culmination of a game development career spanning roughly four decades, drawing a direct line back to his early work on Metal Gear Solid.
Publisher change predates the reveal
Physint’s Xbox publishing deal was not new information at the TGS broadcast. PlayStation Studios notified Kojima Productions by email in mid-June 2026 that it was cancelling its involvement in the project. Kojima has said his team spent roughly three months searching for a replacement before agreeing to work with Xbox again, an arrangement that already covers the horror title OD.
PlayStation, Xbox, and Kojima Productions each confirmed the switch publicly on September 9 and 10, 2026, about a week before the Skarsgård casting was unveiled at Tokyo Game Show. The TGS presentation reaffirmed Xbox’s role as publisher rather than introducing it.
Project status
Kojima Productions is developing Physint alongside OD, its cloud-powered horror project with filmmaker Jordan Peele. OD’s cast includes Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier, who appears posthumously following his death in November 2025. Kojima has said Physint still needs several more years of development, and neither a release date nor launch platforms have been announced for the game.
Kojima’s reveal came during the same edition of the show that closed early: CESA canceled Tokyo Game Show 2026’s fifth and final day, September 21, as Typhoon Dujuan approached Japan, marking the first time in the event’s 30-year history that a day was called off once the show was already underway.
