“Lioness” season 3 just ended with a pair of game

Taylor Sheridan‘s spy thriller was better than ever over the last eight episodes, culminating in an ending that delivered two shocking reveals. “Talking to Taylor, he’s like, ‘I never end on cliffhangers,'” Lioness star Laysla De Oliveira recently toldEntertainment Weekly. “And I’m like, ‘You’ve literally been doing that.'”

Sunday’s finale, “The Unravelling,” found Joe (Zoe Saldaña) finally coming home following her abduction, but she arrived to a “For Sale” sign on her front yard, a note, and an empty house. The contents of the letter left by Neal (Dave Annable) are not revealed, but it’s clear that Joe’s husband is gone and took their children with him. Joe breaks down when she goes into her daughter’s room and finds the closet and drawers cleared out.

While Neal doesn’t appear in the finale, the hints of him reaching his breaking point were there throughout the season, from his drinking to the impact that the situation was having on his girls. In last week’s penultimate hour, Neal told Kaitlyn (Nicole Kidman) that he needs her to get Joe out of the field, saying, “I can’t do this anymore.” At the end of that episode, after being rescued, Joe was brought to the McNamara household, only to then tell her team to keep driving.

“My heart breaks for Neal,” Saldaña told EW ahead of season 3. “Neal is an extraordinary man, but even he’s human. He has these needs and this responsibility to his daughters, and for him, it’s very clear that, by choosing to start a family, he has to honor his daughters before he honors other people’s daughters, and he doesn’t understand why Joe can’t see it that way. If I was in Neal’s shoes, I don’t know if I would stay, if I would be this accepting. And that’s the tension that Joe always has to keep at home between her and Neal. He’s promising her that he’s gonna be there, but the question is, can she be there?”

As if Neal’s departure wasn’t enough, “The Unravelling” doesn’t stop there. All season, there’s been a mystery surrounding who was behind Joe’s kidnapping. Was it the Russians? The Iranians? No, in fact, it was Aaliyah Amrohi (Stephanie Nur), the woman who Cruz (De Oliveira) was recruited to target at the start of the series.

Cruz was put in Aaliyah’s orbit to get close to her father, Asmar Ali Amrohi, an Iraqi terrorist financier. Not part of the plan was Cruz and Aaliyah falling for each other and becoming romantically involved. The mission came to a head at the conclusion of season 1 when Cruz killed Aaliyah’s father and fiancé at her wedding.

Aaliyah resurfaces in the final scene of season 3, taking a bath in a mansion in Qatar, when a henchman tells her that the attempt to take Joe “didn’t work out” for the “second time.” “Try again,” she replies. “Maybe third time’s the charm.” When asked if it would be easier to just handle her in the U.S., Aaliyah explains, “We have to get her out. If we get her out, the others will come to save her. And then we have them all.”

Yes, she wants revenge on the full Lioness team!

Cruz is sure in for quite the surprise, as is her new girlfriend and colleague Josie (Genesis Rodriguez).

“This is Cruz’s first adult relationship,” De Oliveira told EW of Cruz and Josie. “So there are sides to herself that she’s certainly discovering: feeling comfortable with somebody and having somebody completely see her and being completely honest and able to joke around, even if those jokes don’t land with everyone. It’s really fun to explore and find that, because we see her fall in love and really discover who she is in season 1, but she’s not able to be completely honest.”

Paramount+ has yet to renew Lioness for a fourth season, but the streamer previously waited 10 months between the season 2 finale and a season 3 renewal, and it’s hard to envision that Sheridan doesn’t get to play these twists out.
