Absolute Green Lantern No. 16 ends with the debut of Absolute Jessica Cruz. Unlike her Prime Earth counterpart, it looked like she was going to be a villain. Because once she was given the powers of the Green Lantern, she had big, crazy eyes and said she wanted to be on Mogo’s side, which was there to destroy entire planets. Sadly, that’s how the episode ends. But the good news is that the next issue of Absolute Green Lantern explained everything perfectly.
The beginning of this issue focused on the origins of Sinestro and Jessica Cruz. Both Thaal (Sinestro/Sin Es Tro) and Jessica went through traumatic moments that affected the rest of their lives. Thaal’s quest for knowledge leads him to use Mogo (the living planet) to destroy entire civilizations.
Meanwhile, like her Prime Earth counterpart, Jessica Cruz witnesses her friend’s murder and develops a fear of leaving the house because she believes her life is in danger. It was so bad that she didn’t leave the house for years. It wasn’t until Abin Sur showed up to take her to the Green Lantern starship that she finally gained the courage to step outside.
Later in the issue, Jo Mullein returns with Jessica Cruz, but things aren’t what they seemed in Absolute Green Lantern No. 16. Jessica is on Mogo’s side, but not in the way it originally appeared. Jessica wanted to free Mogo from being used as Thaal’s tool, and she did more than succeed. She gave Mogo a bit of a rebirth.
After Jo and Tomar-Re destroy Thaal’s machine, Sin Es Tro’s grip on Mogo is broken. Then, Jessica Cruz does something incredible. She touches one of the dead animal bones on Mogo, and plant life begins growing, a new blue atmosphere appears, and Mogo looks like an actual planet instead of a cold, black, Death Star-looking instrument of destruction.
The universe was saved from Mogo and Sin Es Tro, but that won’t be the end of the universal threats. The stakes in Absolute Green Lantern have been among the most dire because people seem to die every issue, and in brutal ways. Because of this, it’s easy to believe that writer Al Ewing is just getting started on the tragedy, destruction, and devastation in this series. That much is proven in Absolute Green Lantern No. 18 when the Manhunters arrive.
The Manhunter only appeared briefly, but it was enough to show that they’re a major threat to the entire galaxy. It’s bad enough if they’re anything like the DC Comics Prime Universe versions, but this isn’t Earth-0. The Absolute Universe is based on the twisted mind of Darkseid. So, if they’re among the deadliest beings in the regular DC continuity, imagine what they’ll be like here.
