In Toronto, Canada, the Toronto Blue Jays held a Hello Kitty day during a game against the Baltimore Orioles, using a pop culture theme to attract a new audience. The first 15,000 spectators received limited-edition Hello Kitty bobbleheads, while face painting and friendship bracelet-making were offered at the stadium.
As <a href="https://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports/2026/09/20/baseball/mlb-teams-theme-nights/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>The Japan Times reports, MLB views theme nights as one way to engage women, children and other groups of spectators who might not usually attend baseball games. MLB’s director of marketing and global corporate partnerships, Uzma Rawn Dowler, called such events a tool for expanding the league’s fan base.
Ticket sales and new spectators
According to MLB, 56% of attendees at theme nights last year were new buyers, while women accounted for 45%. At the same time, the league did not provide data showing that visitors to such events subsequently return for other games.
The Blue Jays said that last year’s Barbie theme day generated a 40% increase in ticket sales through the promotion. For the Boston Red Sox, a night dedicated to “Heated Rivalry” became the most successful themed event in the club’s history, with 12,000 promotional tickets sold.

Blue Jays senior director of promotions Jess Wood said the club aims to bring people to the stadium who had not previously attended baseball and encourage them to return through a positive game-day experience.
Betting on popular franchises
According to MLB, pop culture programming generated 38% growth across the league last season, while ticket sales through such special packages were 13% higher than in 2024. Clubs are turning to current cultural products, including Rebecca Yarros’ fantasy novel “Fourth Wing,” the Japanese manga “One Piece,” and reality shows.
Similar theme nights have also been held in recent years by WNBA, NBA and NHL teams, using the Hello Kitty and Star Wars franchises. Sports economics expert Victor Matheson noted that there is no convincing evidence of long-term growth in loyalty to teams after such promotions, although themed events can ensure full stands every year.
