Throughout the years, multiple movies and TV shows have been released as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe—an interconnected franchise that tells one single overarching story. Careful planning is required when creating a long-running saga, as every story needs to be consistent with prior events and things that will happen in the future. With so many moving pieces on the board, it’s normal for projects to get cancelled, either because the studio didn’t think they would be successful or due to an unexpected change in plans. Well, the MCU has been no different.
Movies like Armor Wars and Blade were axed, while Avengers: The Kang Dynasty had to be reworked into Avengers: Doomsday. Furthermore, shows like Okoye and Damage Control never saw the light of day. Most of these cancelations took place during the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, which in turn has put the fate of upcoming announced and rumored projects in question. Fortunately, it seems one of Marvel’s future crossovers is still alive and well, despite fans’ fears that it was also shelved.
Marvel is still working on a Champions project, reports say
According to industry insider Alex Perez , Marvel is still working on a Champions project, and its build-up will start to become apparent during the events of VisionQuest. However, theorked from a Disney+ show into a theatrical film
Although Champions has never been officially confirmed by Marvel, the seeds for it have already been planted. For starters, the post-credits scene of The Marvels featured Kamala Khan recruiting Kate Bishop in a similar fashion to how Nick Fury first persuaded Iron Man to join the Avengers initiative. Furthermore, Wiccan and Speed, who were among the original Young Avengers lineup, have been key characters in the WandaVision trilogy.
Perhaps the strongest piece of evidence was leaked Avengers: Doomsday concept art that showcased Ms. Marvel, Kate Bishop, Wiccan, Speed, and Cassie Lang together, hinting that the team will assemble in the near future. Multiple reports also supported this idea, claiming that the Champions would have their own standalone series.
Unfortunately, the project’s status was put into question when it was rumored that Marvel would not produce any new Disney+ shows moving forward, limiting itself to producing more episodes of returning projects like Daredevil: Born Again or Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and creating more special presentations like The Punisher: One Last Kill.
While newer reports have contradicted the idea that there will be no “new” Marvel content on Disney+, we don’t know much about what shows are set to be released after VisionQuest. Maybe it’s because of this that the studio is considering shifting Champions from a series to a movie. While the change would result in audiences spending less time with each and every character, Thunderbolts* proved that it is possible to make a cohesive crossover project featuring pre-existing heroes who aren’t part of the official Avengers ensemble.
In addition to coming together during the events of Avengers: Doomsday, the Champions are rumored to be among the main characters in Avengers: Secret Wars, alongside Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. It’s clear Marvel has big plans for these young heroes in the next saga, so perhaps the confirmation of their standalone project could come in October during New York Comic-Con or next year at San Diego Comic-Con.
On the bright side, VisionQuest will reportedly give us a hint of what’s to come for Champions, and we aren’t far from discovering what adventures lie in store for the iconic android.
