Actor Amal Sehrawat has shared his thoughts on the changing entertainment landscape, the growing influence of OTT platforms and the evolving expectations of audiences. With the boundaries between films, television and digital content becoming increasingly fluid, Amal believes actors today have more opportunities to explore diverse characters and stories.

Talking about how he sees the industry evolving over the next five years, Amal says content will continue to drive the entertainment space. “I think the industry is going to become even more content-driven. Audiences today are far more aware and have access to cinema from across the world, so they expect better storytelling, stronger performances and authenticity,” he says. While technology is expected to play a larger role, Amal believes the fundamentals of the industry will remain unchanged. “Technology will definitely play a bigger role, but I believe good stories and good actors will always remain at the heart of the industry,” he adds.

Amal Sehrawat on choosing between films, television and digital

Amal says he does not want to restrict himself to a particular medium and prefers to make choices based on the story and character. “I wouldn’t really like to restrict myself to one medium. I enjoy the process of acting, and for me, the role and the story matter more than whether it’s a film, television show or digital project,” he shares. According to the actor, every medium comes with its own challenges and provides opportunities to learn and grow as a performer.

‘OTT has opened up a lot of opportunities’

The rise of OTT platforms has also created space for a wider variety of characters, particularly for performers who may not fit conventional ideas of a protagonist.

“OTT has opened up a lot of opportunities, especially for actors who may not fit into the conventional definition of a leading man or heroine,” Amal says. He points out that digital storytelling has made room for “layered characters, grey shades and stories that don’t necessarily follow a typical commercial format.” For actors, he believes this shift is particularly exciting.

Amal also feels the depth and flexibility of web series have contributed to their growing popularity. “I think it’s the freedom and depth of storytelling. A series can take its time to develop characters and relationships over several episodes, which allows audiences to become emotionally invested,” he explains. The convenience of consuming content at one’s own pace, he adds, has also contributed to changing viewing habits.

Amal Sehrawat on inclusivity and diversity

Speaking about inclusivity in the entertainment industry, Amal believes there has been a noticeable shift in how audiences respond to different kinds of performers.

“Audiences are accepting different faces, body types, backgrounds and perspectives much more than before,” he says. However, he acknowledges that there is still room for the industry to become more inclusive. “We still have a long way to go, but the industry is slowly becoming more open to talent rather than just conventional perceptions of what a hero or actor should look like,” he adds.

On remakes, sequels and changing audience expectations

Amal feels remakes and sequels can work when there is a genuine creative reason behind revisiting an existing story. “I think remakes and sequels can work when there is a genuine creative reason behind them,” he says. He believes simply attempting to recreate the success of an earlier film may not necessarily resonate with audiences. Instead, bringing “a fresh perspective, contemporary treatment or a new interpretation to an existing idea” can make such projects interesting.

The actor is also encouraged by the growing presence of strong female protagonists in Indian entertainment.

“I think it’s fantastic and long overdue. A good story shouldn’t be defined by gender,” Amal says. He believes well-written female characters can make stories richer and more realistic, while audiences are increasingly open to narratives that move beyond traditional stereotypes. “Personally, I would love to see even more well-written characters for both men and women rather than stories being built around stereotypes,” he adds.

Amal Sehrawat on social media and the actor-audience connect

Social media has significantly changed how celebrities interact with audiences, and Amal acknowledges its growing influence. “Social media has completely changed the relationship between actors and audiences,” he says, pointing out that viewers can now get a glimpse into an actor’s personality, lifestyle and opinions beyond their on-screen work. At the same time, Amal believes social media visibility should not overshadow an actor’s craft. “I also believe an actor’s work ultimately has to speak louder than social media numbers,” he states.

‘I would love to see more stories that feel real and rooted’

Looking ahead, Amal hopes Indian entertainment explores more stories rooted in reality while continuing to entertain audiences. “I would love to see more stories that feel real and rooted but are still entertaining,” he says. From human relationships and real-life achievers to unconventional characters and different aspects of Indian society, the actor feels there are numerous stories waiting to be explored. “We have so many incredible stories around us that haven’t been explored properly — human relationships, real-life achievers, unconventional characters and different aspects of Indian society,” he adds.

For Amal, the future of entertainment lies in balancing meaningful storytelling with engaging cinematic experiences. “I think audiences are ready for stories that make them feel something, think about something and still have a great cinematic experience,” he concludes.
