Caroline Darya Framke who was chief TV critic at Variety from 2019 to 2023, will join the Culture desk. Read more in the below note from Culture editor Sia Michel.
I am delighted to announce that Caroline Darya Framke will be coming to Culture as a television critic.
She will join the stellar television team led by TV editor Jeremy Egner and will bring criticism to video and visual pieces, host the Watching newsletter and write essays and reviews.
Caroline was chief TV critic at Variety from 2019 to 2023. There, she reviewed shows like “The White Lotus” and “Severance”; wrote timely columns onthe TV legacy of Anthony Bourdainafter his death and theOscars’ clumsy feminism; and reported features on game-changing series like “BoJack Horseman,” thehuge growth of English and European socceron American television, and how TV fans went online during the pandemic.
She previously worked at Vox as a culture writer from 2015 to 2018, often connecting entertainment to politics and current events. Since leaving Variety, Caroline has written for The Atlantic, The Boston Globe and other outlets. In 2019, the Los Angeles Press Club named her TV Critic of the Year.
Caroline grew up in New Jersey and London and graduated from Smith College with a degree in English literature and film studies.
“I learned the value of criticism well before I became a critic myself,” she said. “My late grandmother, Janet Lazarian, was an arts critic. Though her paper, The Tehran Journal, shuttered after the Iranian Revolution, her discerning eye never wavered. I may not have realized I wanted to channel her when I started writing about my favorite shows on Tumblr as a teenager, but I sure do now that I’m joining The Times as a TV critic. I can’t wait to tackle our most rapidly evolving medium with the curiosity and insight it deserves.”
