Nagaland eyes live entertainment as economic driver

Nagaland explores a Live Entertainment Economy Framework to promote economic growth, employment, tourism and cultural industries, with LiveNow appointed as consultant.

DIMAPUR —A meeting to discuss the development of a live entertainment economy framework for Nagaland was held on Tuesday at the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Kohima, under the chairmanship of Secretary, IPR, Orenthung Lotha.

According to a DIPR report, Lotha highlighted the growing importance of the live entertainment sector as a potential driver of economic growth and livelihood generation in the state.

He said live entertainment should be viewed not only as a platform for cultural expression and recreation but also as aemployment and supporting allied industries

The secretary called for mechanisms to monetise events and ensure that large-scale programmes generate sustainable economic returns for local stakeholders while contributing to the state’s economy.

He noted that Nagaland’s rich cultural heritage, musical talent, creative community and enthusiastic youth provide a strong foundation for building a vibrant live entertainment ecosystem.

Lotha also stressed the need for inter-departmental coordination and collaboration, stating that hosting major national and international events would require the collective efforts of various line departments and stakeholders.

Director of IPR, Dzüvinuo Theünuo, expressed appreciation for the LiveNow team’s involvement in developing the framework.

Director of LiveNow, Atsunglir Jamir, presented the team’s initial study, research findings and observations on the existing landscape and potential of Nagaland’s live entertainment sector.

Jamir outlined the sector’s potential to contribute to skill development, employment generation, entrepreneurship and tourism promotion.

He said a stronger live entertainment ecosystem could create opportunities for local artists, performers, event professionals, technicians, production crews and other service providers.

He further pointed to the need to strengthen and upgrade existing infrastructure and facilities to enable Nagaland to host events of national and international standards.

Such improvements, he said, would enhance the state’s ability to attract major events and promote it as a destination for entertainment, cultural and experiential tourism.

The LiveNow director also outlined the team’s short-term objectives, including positioning Nagaland as an entertainment hub in the Northeast, attracting major national and international events, and developing “Nagaland Live” as a distinctive brand representing the state’s live entertainment ecosystem.

The meeting concluded with discussions on the preliminary findings and recommendations of the inception study.

Participants stressed the importance of further consultations with relevant stakeholders and line departments to develop a comprehensive and actionable framework.

LiveNow has been appointed as the consultant for the development of the live entertainment economy framework.
