Bloomberg News has hired veteran entertainment journalist Dawn Chmielewski as an editor in its Los Angeles bureau, adding an experienced Hollywood and media reporter to its entertainment, California and national news coverage.
Chmielewski will start Sept. 21 and work primarily with Bloomberg’s entertainment, media and telecommunications team, led by managing editor Lucas Shaw. She will also contribute to the group covering California and national news under managing editor Sarah McGregor.
The appointment gives Bloomberg an editor with extensive experience covering the intersection of entertainment, technology and business at a time when Hollywood’s traditional operating models continue to intersect with streaming, digital distribution and major technology platforms.
Chmielewski joins Bloomberg after five years as an entertainment reporter at Reuters. Her work there added to a career that has included reporting and editing positions at several prominent technology, entertainment and general-interest news organizations.
Before Reuters, Chmielewski wrote cover stories for Forbes on entertainment executives Jeffrey Katzenberg and Shari Redstone. She also co-authored “Binge Times: Inside Hollywood’s Furious Billion-Dollar Battle to Take Down Netflix,” a book examining the competition among established media companies and streaming platforms as they sought to challenge Netflix.
Her earlier career included positions as an editor or writer at Deadline, Re/Code, the Los Angeles Times and the San Jose Mercury News. Those roles gave her experience across Hollywood, Silicon Valley and the broader media and technology sectors, areas that increasingly overlap as entertainment companies compete over distribution, audiences and digital business models.
Chmielewski also hosts a weekly entertainment business report on KPCC, the Los Angeles NPR affiliate, extending her work beyond print and digital journalism into broadcast coverage.
For Bloomberg, the hire strengthens a Los Angeles operation positioned close to the companies and executives shaping the entertainment industry. Chmielewski’s background combines traditional Hollywood reporting with coverage of technology and corporate strategy, providing experience relevant to Bloomberg’s business-focused approach to media and entertainment news.
The dual nature of her assignment is also notable. While Chmielewski will primarily work with Shaw’s entertainment, media and telecom team, her involvement with McGregor’s California and national news operation gives Bloomberg additional flexibility to cover stories that extend beyond the entertainment business.
That overlap has become increasingly important as developments involving major studios, streaming companies and technology platforms carry implications for labor, regulation, corporate finance and California’s economy. Chmielewski’s experience covering both entertainment and technology places her across many of those areas rather than within a narrowly defined Hollywood beat.
McGregor and Shaw announced the appointment to Bloomberg staff, highlighting Chmielewski’s five years at Reuters as well as her previous reporting, editing, book and broadcast experience.
Outside journalism, Chmielewski is an avid cyclist and runner and has completed 45 half and full marathons.
Her arrival expands Bloomberg’s editorial bench in Los Angeles with a journalist whose career has tracked many of the structural changes reshaping the entertainment business, from the growth of digital media to the streaming competition that has altered how major entertainment companies develop, distribute and monetize content.
