Christopher Briney is finally sharing the story behind his broken hand.
Earlier this year, the Summer I Turned Prettystar revealed that he broke his hand in October (and still has a few scars to prove it), while filming his new movie, The Julia Set. But when he was asked about how the injury occurred during an April visit to Today, Briney told hosts Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones that he wanted to save the tale for the movie’s premiere.
And the moment has finally arrived.
The Julia Set made its world premiere Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival. Afterwards, Briney and his castmates stopped by EW’s studio at TIFF, where he decided to let the cat out of the bag.
“I punched a wall in this movie,” Briney shared. “I can finally say that.”
As his co-star Nico Hiraga praised the “sick story,” Briney explained that it happened while filming an emotionally intense scene that sees his character hit a wall. But instead of playing it up for the camera, Briney threw a real punch, leading to some painful consequences.
“It’s in the movie,” he said. “When I punch a wall, I did break my hand.”
He added, “And thank God that was towards the end of filming.”
At that, his costar and veteran actor Jason Isaacs jumped in, teasing, “You know you’re meant to pretend for those kinds of things. You do understand, right?”
“I pulled back a little bit,” Briney exclaimed. “It was a hairline fracture, it could’ve been worse.”
As a way of defense, he quipped, “I’m strong.”

The coming-of-age film from Niki Byrne, in her feature debut, sees the duo explore a relationship while being weighed down by the pressures of the test, which may very well determine their futures. Isaacs stars as Pascal’s father, a giant in the world of mathematics whose legacy looms large over his son. The film also stars Gillian Anderson, Nina Hoss, and Chloe Bailey.
