TV tonight: surprise smash hit show Saturday Night Live UK is back!
Jeff Goldblum is the first guest host and new faces join the comedy cast. Plus, another magnificent farewell to the Proms! Here’s what to watch this evening
Saturday Night Live UK
Earlier this year, pretty much everybody expected this US late-night import to fail. But it turned out to be such a hoot (mostly thanks to Jack Shep’s golden Princess Diana impression) that its return is a welcome relief to autumn nights. The comedy names that made it such a success are back – along with newbie Freddie Meredith – and they’re joined by the first celebrity host, Jeff Goldblum. HR
Last Night of the Proms
The biggest night of the Proms and a bittersweet end to the season. Katie Derham and Nick Mohammed host the classical bonanza, ranging from Bernstein’s dazzling Overture to Candide to Holst’s buoyant Jupiter and hits from Guys and Dolls. As per tradition, Land of Hope and Glory et al marks the big end and can be seen on BBC One from 9pm. HR
The Celebrity Inner Circle
With Britain’s Got Talent not returning until next year, Amanda Holden’s reign of Saturday night telly continues with season two of this QI-meets-The Traitors quiz show. Six contestants including a standup and a “retired granny” are paired with celebrities, as they outsmart each other until one of them goes home with £18k. Priya Elan
The Box
Gary Lineker’s bafflingly contrived celebrity gameshow continues, randomly. After a witless debating task at the Oxford Union, Brighton beach at least offers the appearance of physical peril as the contestants swim in the murky sea. But if you can identify the point of any of what’s going on, you ought to win a cash prize. Jack Seale
Another chewy case for venerable cop Martin Beck (Peter Haber) and the Stockholm homicide squad. Their attempts to solve the gang-related murder of a 17-year-old girl are disrupted by a shotgun-wielding vigilante with street justice on his mind. Graeme Virtue
Chaka Khan: Radio 2 in the Park 2026
You can catch highlights of the vintage pop festival at 9pm, featuring Lulu, Texas and Emeli Sandé. Then stick around for this full set from the queen of funk, Chaka Khan, with all the hits to sing along to, from Ain’t Nobody to I Feel For You and, of course, I’m Every Woman. HR

In the Grey, out now, Prime Video
There’s a conspicuous absence of cockneys in this new action thriller – but otherwise it’s your typical Guy Ritchie joint, elevated by the presence of Jake Gyllenhaal as Bronco Beauregard, one half of a glorified, globe-trotting debt-collecting duo with Henry Cavill as his more reticent other half, Sid. Eiza González is on – effectively – Miss Moneypenny duties as Rachel Wild, a lawyer who employs Bronco and Sid to do her dirty work (ie all the cool stunts), on account of their absolute willingness to operate in the legal-moral grey zone of the title. The History of Sound, 7.50am, 2.50pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
Feted young actors Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor have teamed up for this melancholy romance about music and missed connection. Mescal plays Lionel, a gifted musician who meets a more scholarly academic, David (O’Connor), while studying at the New England Conservatory of Music, in the midst of the first world war. Reunited after armistice, the two travel around rural Maine together, recording their folk music on the new-fangled “wax cylinders” and – ultimately, fleetingly – falling in love. Director Oliver Hermanus’s previous work includes Living, the Bill Nighy-starring re-imagining of Kurosawa’s 50s classic Ikiru, and this is a similar symphony of longing and decade-spanning desire. The Red Shoes, 9.50am, BBC Two
If you’ve never seen Powell and Pressburger’s 1948 meta-dance-thriller, you’ve never seen the colour red. It’s that serious. Loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen’s gruesome fairytale, it revolves round aspiring ballerina Victoria Page (a resplendent Moira Shearer) and her toxic relationship with the world-renowned impresario Boris Lermontov (Anton Walbrook). Boris forces her to choose between her art and her love for composer Julian Craster (Marius Goring). But the story is near-irrelevant when the cinematography and choreography are this spectacular.EEJ
