Roblox  announced plans to let game creators publish titles as standalone apps, launch browser-based play without downloads, and access new financial tools, at its 12th annual developers’ conference.

Roblox Developers Conference (RDC) brought together developers, artists, designers, brands and influencers from Roblox’s creator community and marked 20 years of the platform. The company said players spent 29 billion hours on Roblox last quarter across more than 180 countries.

    Standalone apps and browser play

Under a scheme called Play Roblox Everywhere, creators will have the option to publish their games as standalone apps across mobile, PC and consoles, with Roblox providing the underlying technology and services.

Roblox is expanding its engine to support 2D and puzzle games, adding an orthographic camera, animated image containers and direct sprite-sheet import, alongside new interface features such as blur, text shadows and improved gradients. A new notification system will support turn-based, asynchronous multiplayer games. A Friends chat tab will follow players between games, and a voice-typing feature will let them talk rather than type while playing.

Build tool expands, gains AI scene generator

Build, the feature that lets users create and publish a game inside the Roblox app by typing a prompt, is expanding to public alpha in Serbia and Singapore, following an alpha launch in New Zealand this summer. Creators have used it to publish about 9,000 games, and 71 per cent of those who made a game with Build had never previously used Roblox Studio, the company said.

New additions include an asset library, desktop access and finer creative control, along with tools to review analytics and add monetisation; the ability to launch ads from a phone is coming soon. A Scene Generator tool, due later this year, will let creators supply a text prompt and a reference image to produce a game layout in Build or Studio, for further refinement in Studio. Roblox is also adding new capabilities to non-player characters, including ones that can playtest a game, by the end of the year.

Wallet and card for creator earnings

Since launching its Developer Exchange programme in 2013, creators have earned more than $5 billion on Roblox, including approximately $1.7 billion in the past 12 months, the company said.

Roblox Wallet, a financial account for creators, will let them earn directly in real currency, receive automatic payouts each business day, and move funds to other Roblox accounts or an external account, alongside expanded earnings analytics in Creator Hub. It is provided through a financial partner of Roblox’s. The Wallet rolls out later this year to eligible US-based independent creators aged 18 and over, before expanding globally next year. A connected Roblox Card, letting creators spend their balance wherever the card is accepted, will begin rolling out next year.

    Discovery and the Moments tab

The Moments tab, where players watch gameplay clips and tap through to play, is now fully available in the United States. Roblox plans to add gameplay preview clips from Experience Details Pages to the tab, let players tap an avatar to buy the items shown, and make games created with Build playable within it.

The platform’s discovery ranking system now aims to serve younger players, who tend to prefer shorter games, and older players, who favour deeper titles they return to, looking at engagement over the first 28 days rather than the first week. Roblox is also testing a ranking approach based on how many new players a game brings to the platform.
