Turn a mechanical channel dial slowly enough and a PS5 home screen will eventually shimmer into existence on a television older than the microwave oven. That is exactly what happened when a Japanese retro-tech blogger documented the full process of connecting Sony’s current-gen console to a vintage black-and-white set, proving the feat is possible, repeatable, and genuinely strange to witness.
The Adapter Chain That Bridges Decades
Three consumer adapters separate a 4K gaming console from a postwar television, and somehow the signal survives all of them.
The PS5 outputs a digital HDMI signal; the vintage television accepts only analog RF through an earphone-style antenna jack. Nothing about those two facts is compatible, which is where the adapter chain earns its keep.
First, an HDMI-to-composite converter translates the PS5’s digital signal into analog composite video, the familiar yellow-RCA format. Before committing to the full pipeline, the blogger verified this step by routing the composite output through a Game Gear with a TV-tuner module, a satisfying sanity check that confirmed the PS5 image was intact before things got more complicated.
Next, a composite-to-RF modulator places that analog video onto a broadcast-style carrier frequency, typically channel 3 or 4. The TV then treats the PS5 exactly like a local broadcast station, which is precisely how VCRs trained a generation of parents to connect things in the 1980s.
Because the set’s antenna jack predates modern coaxial connectors, a custom cable adaptation was also required to physically complete the link. Each conversion step degrades the signal slightly, so by the time the image reaches the CRT, it is low-resolution, monochrome, flickering, and riddled with analog noise. Why Anyone Would Do This
This is not a practical display upgrade; it is proof that modern consoles and analog-era televisions can still speak to each other.
To be clear, no one should swap their 4K panel for a <a href="https://www.earlytelevision.org/classifieds_postwar.html” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>postwar CRT anytime soon. The console’s actual strengths, 4K output, HDR, and high frame rates, are stripped away the moment the signal hits the first converter.
