Gail Carriger’s “Soulless” series is set in an alternate version of Victorian London with a substantial steampunk theme and supernatural creatures such as werewolves, vampires, and ghosts. In the manga, Carriger’s popular paranormal romance is presented in a visually stunning form with illustrations from well-known graphics artist REM. The omnibus brings all three volumes of the story together into one hefty tome full of action, romance, and plenty of her character’s signature witty and sarcastic humor.
The main character, Alexia Tarabotti seems to find herself in the middle of precarious situations quite often it seems. After a run in with an uninformed vampire at a Duchess’ ball, Miss Tarabotti was forced to defend herself against him, after chastising him on his manners of course.
One never knows what she’ll be getting up to next. Accepting tea with vampire queens, traveling to Scotland by dirigible… she may even have time for an exorcism or two. You see, her existence as a preternatural allows her a certain terminal power over supernatural beings. Merely her touch renders them humanlike. For someone used to being eternal, that presents quite the problem.
When werewolf Lord Maccon shows up to investigate, his presence causes a whole new level of intensity as he and Miss Tarabotti must work together. Not only will they have to navigate the inconvenience of her family’s interference, but also the sparks that fly from the explosive chemistry between them.
Carriger’s “Soulless” series has just the right blend of steampunk, romance, comedic banter, and fantasy. Volumes one, two, and three – “Soulless,” “Changeless,” and “Blameless” become one in this manga adaptation collection. The artwork is astounding, featuring full color pages at chapter beginnings. The imagery brings Carriger’s world to life. From hairstyles and dress fashion of the times to character expressions and creature features, the art draws the reader in as Carriger’s words carry us along through her story.
Join Alexia and her supporting cast of captivating characters. Her best friend and wearer of bad hats, Ivy. Lord Akeldama, flamboyant rove vampire and confidant of Miss Tarabotti. Lord Maccon – good looking, crass, infuriating. And, was it mentioned he’s a werewolf?
It seems Miss Tarabotti and Lord Maccon will be spending a lot more time together as they team up to investigate the strange disappearances of rove vampires as well as werewolves. Will they be able to stand each other’s company? Her life is definitely an adventure and it’s about to get even more convoluted.
