Supergirl had a rough go at the box office. Maybe she’ll soar on streaming?
Following up her appearance in last year’s summer hit “Superman,” Milly Alcock puts on the cape as the title character of DC’s “Supergirl,” now on HBO Max. It’s one of several new flicks hitting your favorite services, also including Tyler Perry’s Netflix threequel “Why Did I Get Married Again?” and the Hulu sci-fi drama “Signal One.” Not only do you get Dennis Quaid, there’s also aliens – what a deal!
Here are 10 new and notable movies you can stream right now:
‘Fuze’
In the heist thriller, an old World War II bomb is found in the middle of London and authorities evacuate most of the city, so it’s a great time for a massive bank robbery. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a British soldier trying to keep the bomb from going boom, while Theo James and Sam Worthington are part of a gang of crooks with some trust issues.
‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’
In a continuation of the “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian,” Mando (Pedro Pascal) and his adorable apprentice Grogu are on the hunt for ex-Imperial warlords. However, their latest job puts them at odds with a crime syndicate, though they find allies in Jabba the Hutt’s son (Jeremy Allen White) and an old Rebel pilot (Sigourney Weaver).
‘Mayday’
In this buddy comedy that’s a paean to “Top Gun” and 1980s action flicks, Ryan Reynolds stars as a hotshot Navy pilot who crash lands in Soviet Russia while on a Cold War-era spy mission. His only hope to get home turns out to be Nick (Kenneth Branagh), a gruff ex-KGB agent who loves American pop culture and is really good in a fight.
‘Parasomnia’
In this intensely creepy horror flick, Jasmine Mathews stars as a young woman with a history of night terrors after her traumatic childhood. Just when she thinks she’s OK, they return – and so does the demonic entity who haunts those nightmares and finds a way into reality. (Note: Beware if you’re weirded out by gory stuff with eyeballs!)
‘The President’s Cake’
Baneen Ahmed Nayyef has a wonderful film debut in this moving drama set during the Gulf War. She stars as a 9-year-old Iraqi girl named Lamia who gets chosen from her class to bake a cake for President Saddam Hussein, a pressure-filled project that sends her on an eye-opening journey alongside her grandma, best pal and pet rooster.
‘The Runner’
This tight, ticking-clock thriller unfolds almost in real time, with Gal Gadot as a fit lawyer whose son is kidnapped by a mysterious villain (Damian Lewis). Communicating with this sinister baddiend take out a key witness for a criminal trial she’s working on, or else her kid dies
‘Scary Movie’
Everything from “Sinners” and “Ma” to “Get Out” and “The Substance” are sent up in a comeback for the horror-spoof movie series. The prime target for this “rebooty call,” however, is again the “Scream” films as Ghostface comes for the relatives of returning characters Cindy (Anna Faris), Brenda (Regina Hall) and Shorty (Marlon Wayans).
‘Signal One’
The thought-provoking sci-fi drama is a companion piece of sorts to “Disclosure Day.” Isabelle Fuhrman plays a visionary computer scientist who gets tapped by a tech magnate (Dennis Quaid) to work on a device developed to communicate with aliens. But when they hear back, no one’s sure if the extraterrestrials are friend or foe.
‘Supergirl’
Milly Alcock is a joy to watch as Kara, a jaded, self-destructive protagonist living in a gnarly cosmic landscape in this scrappy DC superhero adventure. When her beloved dog Krypto is poisoned, Kara teams with a vengeful teen (Eve Ridley) and a rambunctious bounty hunter (Jason Momoa) to hunt down the vicious outlaw responsible.
‘Why Did I Get Married Again?’
The couples from director Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married?” series return for a third dramedy set in Italy. The daughter of Angela (Tasha Smith) and Marcus (Michael Jai White) is getting hitched to the son of Roselyn (franchise newcomer Taraji P. Henson), returning characters again remind themselves why they got married, and kids get new perspective on their parents.
