NBA 2K27 comes as sports fans have football on their minds with the release of EA Sports’ College Football 27 and Madden NFL 27. The two football video games are strong, but NBA 2K27 stands out with its gameplay and features that will keep players entertained throughout the 2026-27 NBA season.
One of the biggest improvements is a rebuilt physical defense thanks to ProPlay. I have had struggles on defense in previous games, but NBA 2K27 includes a redesigned hands-up defense and an overhauled shot contest system. I noticed the changes right away, and it makes the gameplay more competitive.
On offense, expanded dribbling customization and a dynamic layup engine help make things more balanced. Additionally, the shot meter gives players a real-time visual guide to hitting the ideal tempo with a tick mark synced to Pro Stick Movement. I think it’s a little easier to shoot with the shot meter this year, but it’s still vital to have the right timing, know your player’s strengths, and make good shot decisions.
One of my favorite things about the NBA 2K franchise is MyCareer, and2K27 goes all out with this year’s feature. After you create your player, you will enter the Fire & Concrete story, which spans 11 chapters, over double the length of last year’s story. The player, MP, begins his journey at high school and continues in the G League before entering the NBA. While these stories can be long, I always enjoy going through MP’s journey, especially this year because he gets to play at Rucker Park.
NBA 2K27 has a strong overall presentation
And speaking of creating a player, gamers can now create a female MyPlayer and put her in The City. With the growth of the WNBA (also known as the W), I appreciate NBA2K building that part of the game to bring in more fans.
Another aspect of NBA 2K27 that stood out for me is the overall presentation. When playing a game, you feel like you are in the arena. That might sound cliché, but the developers of NBA 2K27 excelled at paying attention to detail with the layouts of each arena, halftime entertainment, and different activities during timeouts.
Honestly, I have scratched the surface with the game, as there are so many other features that I haven’t dived into. That said, I did tour The City, and it’s revamped with new-look environments along with the addition of female players. The City has a clean look, but Casual Corner stood out because it is for new players who are looking to work on their game.
There are other aspects of the game that I haven’t dived into yet, such as a deeper franchise mode and the new MyCareer Eras, which is a new mode of MyCareer where players can play in one of five historical eras. NBA 2K27 is not drastically different from the previous editions, but it sticks to a formula that has led to the franchise having critical and commercial success over the last 20-plus years.
