Per a report from What’s On Netflix, the streaming service has allegedly acquired the media rights to several different comic book titles, varying wildly in tone and publisher. The six books, which were all purportedly licensed in the past year, are:
§ Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees (2024-27, IDW Publishing), Patrick Horvath‘s horror series revolving around a serial killer in a world of talking animals during the 1980s. It follows Sam, a murderous bear who maintains the facade of a friendly hardware store owner, only to discover there is a copycat killer in her hometown.
§ <a href="https://imagecomics.com/comics/series/geiger” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Geiger (2021-present, Image/Ghost Machine), Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, and Brand Anderson‘s post-apocalyptic superhero series, which is part of Ghost Machine’s wider Unnamed Universe. The comic follows Tariq Geiger, the “Glowing Man” of Nevada, who battles the Warlords of Vegas following a nuclear war. It was previously optioned by Paramount Television, with Johns attached as showrunner, and Frank and Justin Simien (Dear White People) as co-executive producers.
§ The Infinite Horizon (2007-11, Image), a near future reimagining of The Odyssey by Gerry Duggan and Phil Noto. The six-issue series follows the Soldier, as he leads a military unit abandoned during a war in the Middle East, on a voyage home across the world, complete with “a vicious opponent wearing a cycloptic combat armor,” and “the siren’s call of a predatory society.”
§ Invisible Emmie (2017, HarperCollins), a middle-grade graphic novel by Terri Libenson, that tells the story of two very different girls: “quiet, shy, artistic Emmie,” and “popular, outgoing, athletic Katie,” whose “lives unexpectedly intersect one day, when an embarrassing note falls into the wrong hands.” It is the first entry in Emmie & Friends series.
§ The Night Eaters: She Eats the Night (2022, Abrams ComicArts), Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda‘s horror graphic novel, the book follows a pair of struggling Chinese American twins, who are forced by their ageing mother to help clean up a neighboring home where a murder took place. The book is the first in a trilogy, but Netflix only reportedly bought the rights to the first entry.
§ Radio Spaceman (2022, Dark Horse Comics), a retro sci-fi miniseries by Mike Mignola and Greg Hinkle, that follows the titular mechanical hero as he embarks on a rescue mission, after a spaceship crash lands on a planet full of monsters. The book is not part of Mignola’s Hellboy Universe, or the Outerverse and Lands Unknown Universe he created with other collaborators.
There’s no word on whether these titles are being considered for live-action, animated, film, or TV projects, and no guarantee they’d produced, even if creatives become attached. Netflix has a first-look deal with Dark Horse, and has produced shows based on DH, IDW, and Image titles like The Umbrella Academy, Locke & Key, and The Old Guard before.
