After the Week VR Just Had, I Will Take a Prison Sandbox With a Spoon and a Fish

Bad Inmate lands on Meta Quest and PlayStation VR2 on October 15, with SteamVR following at an unannounced later date. It comes from HyperVR Games, a small studio in Riga, LatShave & Stuff, a barber and tattoo toy from November 2024, plus Pets & Stuff and Titans Clinic. Casual and deeply unserious. Nobody is going to mistake this team for Owlchemy

You are in prison. A guy in the wall says he can help you get out, and his plans are strange. You dig with a spoon, distract somebody with a dumbbell, steal keys, crawl through a hole in the wall, wind up the other inmates, and throw food at people who have earned it. Steam lists the game as VR only with tracked controller support. In 2026 that is not a given. A fair amount of what turns up on Quest now is a flat game wearing a headset.

Two platforms on one date is the real story here

Quest and PSVR2 arriving together is unusual for a studio this size. The normal pattern is Quest first, then a PSVR2 version four to nine months later if the Quest revenue justifies the port, and frequently never at all. Sony’s headset is not drowning in launch day indie support. Shipping both at once means one of two things. Either the engineering was cheaper than usual here, or HyperVR decided the PSVR2 install base was worth eating the cost up front. I have no idea which. It used to be an ordinary decision. It stopped being ordinary somewhere around the point the layoff announcements started.

Now the caveat, which I would rather put here than in a review. Physics comedy sandboxes have one very specific failure mode. The first forty minutes are wonderful. You throw everything that is not bolted down, you find the ragdoll that reacts best, you laugh at the soap, and then you go looking for a reason to keep playing and the game does not have one ready. Job Simulator survived that by being short and knowing it was short. Plenty of the games that copied it did not. Bad Inmate is putting escape plans forward as the spine. Good instinct. But sneak past guards can describe an actual stealth system, or it can describe one guard walking a fixed loop who does not especially care.

Steam still has it as coming soon with no price attached. The Meta store listing and the PlayStation Store page are both up already if you want to follow it. I am not going to pretend a prison sandbox settles anything about where VR is going. But the out-of-home operators are the piece of this industry currently expanding, the studios behind VR’s best known games are cutting staff, and a small team in Latwill take it
