The first age rating for The Legend of Zelda: Echo of Wisdom has arrived, and yes, it looks like we’ll be playing as, uh, Link?
Back in June, at Nintendo’s annual Summer Direct, the developer announced what we’ve been waiting for years: a Legend of Zelda game where you can actually play as the titular princess. Echoes of Wisdom is obviously doing something different with the formula, as instead of picking up a sword, Zelda picks up a special wand that allows her to copy almost anything, so this is obviously going to be a It’s a confusing thing, but it’s still exciting that she got a major series title herself. That’s not entirely her fault, though, as Jason discovered that the game’s ESRB age rating has gone up, with the ratings summary indicating that, yes, series mainstay hero Link is playable.

“This is an adventure game in which players take on the role of Zelda as she attempts to heal the rift across Hyrule and save Link,” the summary begins, which seems consistent with what we know so far. “From a 3/4 top-down perspective, players explore various environments while fighting stylized enemies (e.g. humans, creatures). As Link, players use swords and arrows to defeat enemies; Zelda can use a wand to summon creatures (e.g. Wind) goes into battle with knights, pig soldiers, and slimes).

The penultimate line confirms that Link is playable, but honestly, I thought there would be a simple explanation for that. In the game’s trailer, things start off with Link doing his usual sword-fighting shenanigans, confronting Ganon, etc., which I imagine is playable. It’s possible he’ll play a role in other parts as well, but considering the focus is on rescuing him, I think that’s just a setup for the first part.
Regardless, we won’t have to wait too long to find out, as the game will be available on September 26, which is still a few months away – and yes, it’ll only be releasing on Nintendo Switch as usual.
